The Cultural Resources Program assists the six regions, Highways and Local Programs, Washington State Ferries, and other branches of WSDOT in their cultural resources compliance efforts, particularly coordination of archaeological and historical surveys and evaluations. The Program plays a key role in the Section 106 compliance process in consultation with tribes, SHPO, and other interested parties, in determining effects on and treatment of historic properties, and in preparing memoranda of agreements. The Program also maintains an inventory of historic bridges constructed through 1960, including Historic American Engineering Record (HAER) documentation for many of the state's most significant structures. The Program facilitates cultural resources training, participates in public and professional conferences, and advises agency decision makers in matters of cultural resources management.
