North America is a continent blessed with a multitude of sensational mountain vacation destinations. Many of these top destinations include world-class ski resorts. Both the USA and Canada have plenty of top ski resort destinations to choose from. This being the case, our task of selecting the top 10 ski resorts in all of North America for 2006 is by no means an easy one. There are just so many great destinations to choose from; so much so in fact that we may just get around to naming our second 10 best ski destinations in North America before long. For now, we'll stick with this year's selections of the top 10 ski and snowboard destinations featured in either the US and Canada. We begin with our first 5 selections. Next month we'll follow that up with out next 5. So be sure to check back for the second half of the list. For now here's the first 5 selections of our top North American mountain ski resort destinations:

.) Whistler/Blackcomb - British Columbia: There's a very good chance that this, our top pick for North American ski resorts, will only gain popular acclaim in years to come. And that's because Whistler is the site designated, along with Vancouver, to host the next Winter Olympics. That kind of global exposure is likely to push Whister/Blackcomb to stratospheric levels of popularity. What has got Whistler to where it is today is its impressive selection of perfectly crafted mountain runs (suited for all skill levels) as well as snowboarder attractions like Blackcomb's Super Park and the World Cup Halfpipe. Whistler village is a full-fledged city that offers plenty of shopping opportunities for Whistler/Blackcomb mountain vacationers.

.) Vail - Colorado: Vail is famous for its heavenly powder and its miles and miles of perfectly groomed runs. Vail offers the very latest in high-speed chair-lift technology and this guarantees that you'll get a maximum number of runs in each day that you hit the mountain slopes here. Snowboarders love Vail as well; and with good reason! Vail features plenty of free-riding opportunities on wide-open terrain. Vail really does offer a multi-faceted mountain vacation experience for area visitors to enjoy. Some of the other top mountain recreation activities featured at Vail include snowshoeing, tobogganing, snowmobiling, and of course, cross-country skiing. No matter what your mountain vacation expectations, Vail, Colorado is not likely to disappoint.

.) Northstar at Tahoe - Lake Tahoe, California: Northstar features a fill seven freestyle terrain parks. This, along with two halfpipes serves to make Northstar extremely popular with snowboarding enthusiasts. Tahoe's Northstar is popular as a family-friendly mountain vacation destination. The popular and acclaimed kids ski school is a big part of this family appeal. Of course Northstar has plenty of top ski runs and infrastructure to choose from as well. And California's Tahoe is famous for its stunning mountain vistas.

.) Bretton Woods - New Hampshire: Bretton Woods was already a top North American mountain vacation destination and recent facility expansion has only added to the alpine appeal of the area. A new halfpipe and terrain park are part of the new attractions available at Bretton Woods. Cross-country skiing is also a major attraction here. When it comes to accommodation, few locations in the continent, let alone the world, can compare with the Mount Washington Resort at Bretton Woods, New Hampshire. The Bretton Woods Resort also offers a wide variety of restaurants and gift shops for mountain enthusiasts to explore as well.

.) Aspen - Colorado: You know a state is something special when it comes to providing spectacular mountain vacation opportunities when two of our top five make their home there. And that's certainly the case with Colorado. Aspen is our second Colorado selection of top five North American ski resort destinations. Aspen covers four mountains and well over 4000 acres of perfectly crafted ski-able terrain. Every level of skier will find plenty of runs to keep them happy here. Snowboarders will find plenty of mountain runs available to them as well. Like all top mountain vacation locales, Aspen is also well known for its wide variety of shops and restaurants. Put this together with plenty of cross-country trails, guided snowshoe tours, tobogganing and more, and it's easy to see why Aspen makes out top 5 list of North American ski resort destinations.
