County faces fines for Puuanahulu

Hawaii County and Waste Management of Hawaii face federal fines as high as $32,500 per day for failing to file proper reports about emissions from the landfill at Puuanahulu.

In addition, Waste Management and the City and County of Honolulu face the same fines for what an official from the Environmental Protection Agency calls "far more serious violations" at the Waimanalo Gulch landfill in Honolulu. Waste Management is contracted by the separate counties to operate both facilities.

Pic Dresses, tuxes, corsages... it must be prom time
Prom -- it's, like, such a big deal.

In a few short weeks, West Hawaii's high schoolers head to the last dance of the year. As one of the biggest social events of high school, students may find peer pressure a little heavier than usual.

There's the pressure to find the right dress, whether to go stag or take a date, who to take and what to do after the dance.

Of the more than 600 prom-goers surveyed by Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) in May 2005, 45 percent reported pressure to drink and drive or ride with someone who had been drinking.

Pic Dragons 'D' overwhelms Cowgirls
Honokaa used tenacious defense and a relentless offensive attack as 11 of 14 Dragon players scored in a 61-17 win over the Kohala Cowgirls Thursday night in Big Island Interscholastic Federation girls basketball action at Honokaa.

The Dragons remain perfect on the season, improving to 4-0 with the victory and remaining a half game behind first-place Konawaena (5-0) in the BIIF standings.

Kohala fell to 3-3.

Honokaa set the tone early, jumping all over the Cowgirls and breaking out on a 17-0 run to open the game.

"They took us out of our game," Kohala coach Moses Bautista said. "They were able to set the tempo and we just couldn't get back on defense fast enough."

Online Poll
The state Legislature may pass a bill banning smoking in all bars, restaurants and public venues. What's your opinion? (Also comment on our forums, found at the left side of the home page.)
Good. People should go outside to smoke. Employees and other customers don't need second-hand smoke.
The law is fine now. It's ok that certain bars and restaurants can allow smoking if there isn't too much food served.
Wrong direction. Bars especially are places people go to drink and smoke. People should expect smoking in bars.
