General Characteristics
Guácimo has 576.48-km2 extensions, east limit is Siquirres canton and the South limit is Turrialba.

Guácimo has a tropical humid climate with temperatures between 24 y 25ºC. Its name was took from a huge Sarapiqui tree that existed in this place long time ago and here was found the actual town. Banana’s plantation was the development sustain of the zone, plus the construction of the train between Siquirres y San José.

The economy in Guácimo is mainly based on agricultural activities, blessed with a lot of rivers, like Reventazon-Parismina, where the adventures practice river rafting, also assisted by the establishment of the Central Volcanic Range Forest Reserve protecting a huge diversity of flora and fauna.

Sarapiqui has 3 districts, La Virgen, Horquetas & Puerto Viejo, it is the biggest Sarapiqui`s canton with 692.94 km2. The climate is moderate with an average temperature of 24º & 25ºC.
The past habitants of this canton of the Heredia province were the Votos Indians who occupied the Sarapiqui plains, the colonizers decided to take this zone because they wanted to open an access to North to the San Juan River.

Sarapiqui produce coffee, corn, cacao, cardamom, banana, dwarf fan palm and fruits, although since various years the protections of forests has grow up very fast, including the creation of other protected zones like Braulio Carrillo National Park, Sarapiqui Protected zone, La Selva Biological stations and the new Neotrópico Sarapiqui Centre of which offers an Archaeology park, museum and a Botanical garden plus other interest attractions.
