A very nice family, the Sousa's of New Windsor, NY, came to SOAR today to get one of Crystal's pups. They were thrilled and the little puppy seemed just as thrilled with his new family. Crystal got to meet them and she too approved.

4/15/2006 Please Help Find Kapu
Kapu has been missing since 4/5/06 from the Crestwood/Kingsgrant Subdivision area of Wilmington. She is very friendly and loves everybody. She is 8 months old. She has short salt and pepper colored hair, white tip on tail, tan socks, and large black dot on rump. I am offering a reward. If you have ANY information, please call me, Gaile Thompson, (910) 395-4296, Gthom74579@aol.com
UPDATE: Kapu has been found and is now back home! Yippee!

Volunteers had fun today playing with the dogs today. We let the dogs out into the common area for frisbee and exercise.
Crystal had been taken away from her pups because they were just getting to big for her to handle. But today we had a mother/son/daughter reunion. A wonderful family was visiting SOAR from Wake Forest, NC and they helped hold the pups so they wouldn't overwhelm Crystal. Crystal was so glad to see them, and they to see her. There might be a sweeter dog than Crystal somewhere but we don't know if we've ever seen one.
On Monday a nice woman from New Windsor, NY will come to SOAR to adopt one of Crystal's pups. She's very excited to meet this puppy and we're very excited to meet her and to introduce her to her new puppy.

SOAR is very sad as one of it's dearest volunteers, Bob Mangum, passed away very unexpectedly on Thursday. Bob had been taking care of our cats for a long time and every one of us, including the cats, will miss him very much. A memorial service is being held on Sunday, Mar. 26. |
3/22/2006 Want one? We've got nine.
4/6/2006 Update: Now we only have 4 left and the one pictured here has been adopted. We have dark brown ones now.

This past Saturday was a great day at SOAR. The weather was nice and lots of volunteers came to play with and exercise the dogs and cats. One special family, the McLean family of Wilmington and long-time SOAR volunteers, came out and they brought a camera and took lots of pictures. And, for your viewing pleasure, here they are. Alexis took the pictures and the beautiful young girl in the pictures is her sister Katelyn. No, Katelyn is not up for adoption so save your inquiries. Their dad David is in a couple of the pics also. Enjoy! Click the pics for enlargements.

The Bow Wow Boogie was a great success. Many more people attended this second edition and we think everyone had a great time. It's just getting bigger and bigger. Last year we made $2,300 and this year it was over $3,000. Every cent will go directly to our vet bills.
We want to give special thanks to Carolyn Felton, our sponsor, Betsy Sherwood and Sue Altmeter, event organizers, the Moose Lodge for donating their superb facility, Bill and Carol Ruth and the Brunswick County Shaggers for DJ services and overall event support, and to Barbara Long and her dog Selkie, Jeanine Johnson-Brown and her dog Trapper for their wonderful exhibition of canine freestyle. So many people, and dogs, had a hand in making this dance so much fun.

We've got pups!! They were born, 9 of them, two days ago, 2/10/2006. Right now, as you can see, they look like little rats. We can only hope they will grow up to be as beautiful as their mother, Crystal. |

Fred died today. He had to be euthanized due to acute kidney failure. All of SOAR is very sad because, as you know, Fred was with us for 14 years before finally getting adopted. Fred's sister and best friend, Darlin', is still doing good though and we pray for her continued good health. There are other dogs in her household so maybe, in some way, they will be able to lessen Darlin's sadness. Gisela, thank you so much for giving Fred such a good home and so much love in his last year.

SOAR has people who donate to us on a regular basis. And some of these kind people have been doing so for years. Volunteers wonder what connection these folks have to SOAR. Jeannine would know the story of each but new volunteers do not. Every now and then we find out though. We recently got a letter from one of these long time donors (since 1992) and we are sharing her letter with you here. Please click here to read Norma Wall's letter. |

Memoriam to Patrick
You must read the following. It is a most loving tribute from a wonderful woman who adopted a dog from us in 2001. The dog has now passed away and in reading her tribute you will come to have a better understanding of the bond between humans and animals. It's letters like this that give shelter workers their greatest reward. Please read on.
In Oct. 2001, I adopted Patrick, an approximately ten-year old, one-eyed, blonde cocker spaniel who had been in your care for about two years.
I just wanted to let you know that Patrick passed away in late Nov. 2005 after living a very comfortable life filled with love and affection. Patrick succumbed to old age and died peacefully in his sleep in our home after a long battle with declining health. He may have been in your shelter awaiting adoption but in truth it is he who rescued and adopted me. I tried to call you to let you l know but I began to cry and could not get the words out. I miss him very much. I will eternally miss him but am so grateful you all took the time to never give up on him until we were united. He brought such peace and joy into my life because of you at SOAR. there's more |
