Three Forks, Montana is a town rich in history and natural beauty. Built at the confluence of the Madison, Gallatin, and Jefferson Rivers, Three Forks was an important stop for Lewis and Clark in the summers of 1805 and 1806. Once they arrived in Three Forks with Sacajawea, the Shoshone Indian girl who became Lewis and Clark's guide, she recognized the mountains of the area. This led her to take the Jefferson Fork up to the "Beaver's Head" and lead the party over the Continental Divide.

Lewis and Clark were not the only prominent historical figures to be affected by Three Forks. Expeditionist John Colter made his famous escape from the Blackfeet Indians here in 1809. One year later her returned to help establish the town of Three Forks. Other famous fur trappers and traders such as Jedediah Smith, William Sublette, Jim Bridger, and Kit Carson also explored this area near the headwaters of the Missouri River in the early 1800s.
The original town of Three Forks began to take shape in 1908 with the building of the Milwaukee Railroad. Gold discoveries in Montana in the 1860s turned Three Forks into a crossroads for miners, settlers, and freighters traveling between the gold fields.
Today, Three Forks retains its Old West charm with summertime rodeos and close proximity to historical and recreational sites. Always an adventure is the Lewis and Clark Caverns where stalactites and stalagmites create breathtaking scenes. Three Forks is just 6 miles from the Missouri Headwaters State Park, and a short drive to the Madison Buffalo Jump State Monument which archaeologists date back as 4,000 years old. While you are in Three Forks, you might also want to check out nearby ghost towns and authentic tipi rings.
Three Forks is home to spectacular outdoor sports. Be sure to bring your rod for excellent blue ribbon trout fishing, and don't forget your hiking boots for exploring part of the Lewis and Clark Trail. Canoeing on the many rivers of Three Forks is popular, as is hunting and camping. Whatever you love to do outside, you'll find it in Three Forks.
Three Forks is easily accessible off I-90, US-287, and Montana Highway 2, which is a backroad en route between Yellowstone National Park and Glacier National Park.
