Paris was first settled by the Gallic Parisii clan in around 300 BC. The Ile de la Cite offered good protection from invaders while the Seine river provided a fresh water supply and easy means of transportation for trade and the like. The conquest of Gaul in 59 BC and of the Parisii island in 52 BC by Julius Caesar's troops was the start of 300 years of Roman occupation and rule while catapulting Jules himself to fame, power, and the eventual leadership of the up-and-coming Empire.

As the first millennium approached, France was a merely a collection of independent kingdoms, each one with its own languages, traditions and customs. These kingdoms were feudal. The major bonds were between peasant workers to their land owning lords. Paris France would not really return to prominence until the elections in 987. This is when the Count of Paris, Hugh Capet, was given the throne. Under the rule of the Capetian Dynasty (987-1328), Paris then flourished as a centre of power, trading and education.
