Oakland Strike Settled, Schools Still Shut
KRON 4's Will Tran reports from Oakland where some teachers showed up to picket schools Thursday morning even though their union reached a tentative agreement late Wednesday night. Many teachers tell Will they won't celebrate a settlement until they see the details of the proposed contract. Will also talks with a student who expressed support for teachers and a desire for all of the school days she can get to improve her grades.
School's Out, Rec's In
The Oakland Parks and Recreation Department is opening a number of centers around the community on Thursday to accomodate parents who need somewhere for their children to go since school is out. Here is a list of the "School's Out / Rec's In" centers that are open.
Parents Frustrated With Switch in Plans
KRON 4's Dan Kerman says parents are getting conflicting reports about what students should do today.  Oakland schools decided late Wednesday to close classrooms on Thursday.  Parents are still urged to keep kids at home despite the tentative agreement ending the dispute.  The city of Oakland is opening park and recreation centers early to help provide supervised activities for students not in school today.

KRON 4's Phil Matier gets details on the agreement between Oakland School teachers and the district from spokesman Alex Katz.  The district is still urging parents to keep children at home on Thursday although teachers and other school employees will get paid for the day.

New Chief Restructures Richmond P.D.
KRON 4's Charles Clifford reports from Richmond where the community's new police chief is restructuring the department. Chief Chris Mangus is adding three new Deputy Chiefs and opening three new sub-stations. Chief Mangus says the changes will help police address Richmond's high crime rate.
Trees Removed for SJ Grand Prix
KRON 4's Daniel Villareal reports from San Jose where crews are relocating 19 palm trees that line Park Avenue in the downtown area. The trees are going because of the upcoming San Jose Grand Prix. Organizers say the trees are dangerous for the drivers in the race. Still many people tell Daniel they are angry that the trees and downtown San Jose's beauty must pay the price for the race.
President Bush to Honor Local Volunteer
KRON 4's Rob Fladeboe introduces us to a San Jose man who will be on hand to greet President Bush when he arrives in the Bay Area this week. Joe Russo is with an organization that helps older people learn computer skills. The President is giving Russo an award to honor his long years of volunteer work.

New Faults Found Along San Andreas
At least three active seismic faults have been discovered along the far northern reaches of the San Andreas Fault system. Scientists say the ground surrounding the faults is moving nearly a half-inch per year. But they pose no imminent threat of earthquakes.
New Maps Show Bay Area Fault Lines
KRON 4's Wendy Tokuda takes a look at the proximity of several major seismic faults to BART tracks. Then KRON 4's Charles Clifford takes a look at two new maps from the U.S. Geologic Survey. One looks at all of the known faults in the region while the other focuses on areas that have caused mountains to grow and generated significant quakes in the last two million years.

Clouds will increase through the day on Thursday with a few showers throughout the day Friday and into Saturday. Mark says the system is thinning out but moving slowly which means it will stick around a while.
