This month's dilemma:

How can I clean a heavily textured ceiling?

Submitted by Cyndi in Wisconsin

Solutions:

You don't say what kind of cleaning needs to be done to your ceiling-- but try dry dusting your ceiling first. There are dry dusters on the market that work quite well. A soft dry paint brush might work in deep crevices to remove dust. Liquid cleaners could damage your plaster or drywall ceiling so a professional might need to be called to take care of the problem. Susan, OK

The only way to get a popcorn ceiling clean that I know of is to paint it. The texture is basically clay and will dissolve or come off completely with water. I just had success by simply using a good quality primer to paint the ceiling. Throw down some plastic and get a high nap paint roller and use a paint stick (some telescope for higher ceilings). It's not hard to do just don't push on the roller too hard! Good luck. Dawn, TN

You just might try using rag rollers soaked in equal parts hot water and vinegar, using a paint pole to clean with them. Dry dust first before doing this to get the loose stuff off, and then use this technique. Rag rollers are basically paint rollers with car shop rags rubber banded down. I suggest the vinegar/water trick so as to not damage the environment or your lungs or your budget. Most local Big Lots will have everything you need for this (including the vinegar!) Best of Luck! Marie, KY

When the vacuum did not clean our terribly dusty popcorn ceilings, we started painting them. This was tedious and exhausting. Rather, when we sprayed the ceiling with water (or wet with a towel) the popcorn started to come down in sheets. Keep a drop cloth on the floor. Then we lightly textured the ceilings. It updated the look of the rooms and reduced the dust. Best of Luck! TD

The easiest way is to repaint the ceiling, if its one of those popcorn ceilings. Francine, CA
