The Wisconsin-Illinois Lily Society presents a free series of slide lectures on lilies. James Ault, Ph.D., director of ornamental plant research, Chicago Botanic Garden, will discuss "How to Breed Lilies for Midwestern Gardens."
Wisconsin-Illinois Society Lily Lecture

The Wisconsin-Illinois Lily Society presents a free series of slide lectures on lilies. Dr. Robert Griesbach will speak on "Today's Best Lilies: What They Are and How They Were Developed." Dr. Griesbach is a recently retired professor of biological sciences, DePaul University, and one of the world's leading experts on plant hybridization.
Wisconsin-Illinois Society Lily Lecture

The Wisconsin-Illinois Lily Society presents a free series of slide lectures on lilies. Woodruff Imberman, Winnetka, Illinois, will present "All You Ever Wanted to Know About Lilies, But Were Afraid to Ask." He is past president of the Wisconsin Illinois Lily Society, a lecturer, writer and award-winning amateur lily hybridizer. Those attending will learn how to grow lilies best suited for soil and climate in the Chicagoland area, as well as simple propagation techniques.
Wisconsin-Illinois Society Lily Lecture

The Wisconsin-Illinois Lily Society presents the final lecture in a free series on lilies. Internationally known nature photographer Carol Freeman will speak on "How to Take Great Pictures of Your Garden." Recently, Freeman photographed all 1,200 plants in the Garden's Evaluation Gardens. She will show examples of good and bad garden photographs, and give tips on taking good ones.
Midwest Fruit Explorers Grafting Workshop
April 30, 14 p.m. open to the public, including less experienced or novice grafters
Grafting is a surefire method of producing a tree with fruit identical to its parents. Join the Midwest Fruit Explorers (MidFEx) for a hands-on grafting workshop to create an apple, pear or plum tree. Participants can buy rootstock, follow along with the demonstration, and leave with one or more fruit trees ready to plant in the ground.
Central States Dahlia Society Show & Sale
May 7, 10 a.m.4:30 p.m.
The Central States Chapter of the Society holds its annual dahlia plant and root sale, featuring dahlias in a wide array of sizes, shapes and colors. Rooted cuttings of dahlias and roots from which dahlia plants may be grown will be for sale. Society members are available to answer questions about the culture of dahlias.

Sogetsu Ikebana Society Show and Sale

Members of the Seigyoku-kai Sogetsu Ikebana Society of Chicago demonstrate sogetsu ikebana techniques and answer questions. Sogetsu ikebana is a three-dimensional artistic expression composed of flower and plant material arranged in a container. Although it is based on Japanese tradition, sogetsu is becoming recognized throughout the world as a sculptural form of art. Arrangements are for sale at the end of the show.
Gardeners of the North Shore Show and Sale

The Gardeners of the North Shore hold their annual show and sale, which includes a judged exhibit of flowers, vegetables, herbs and houseplants, open to all amateur gardeners. A wide variety of garden plants are available, ranging in price from $.50 to $50.
Midwest Bonsai Society Show & Sale

The best in the Midwest and one of the top three in the country, this 29th annual bonsai show and sale draws enthusiasts from all over the United States. On display are more than 200 specimens, as well as selections from the Garden's own outstanding bonsai collection. Workshops are presented for all levels of enthusiasts. More than a dozen vendors offer everything bonsai related.
Illinois Mycological Association Show & Sale

The Illinois Mycological Association celebrates the richness of fall mushrooms in Illinois with an exhibit of 50 to 100 varieties. Members provide information and answer questions regarding mushrooms and fungi. Mushrooms, books and t-shirts are for sale.

The 75th annual Dahlia Flower Show offers an outstanding judged exhibit of nearly 1,000 dahlia blooms, ranging in size from a silver dollar to a dinner plate. Dahlias are known for their bright, vibrant colors and perfect petal arrangement. The show features many categories, including single and multiple blooms, baskets of blooms and arrangements in an artistic theme. Society members will provide written information and answer questions regarding the culture of dahlias.

The Woman's Board of the Chicago Horticultural Society presents its annual Bulb Bazaar, featuring more than 200,000 daffodils, tulips, allium and other specialty bulbs in 230 varieties. Bulbs are shipped directly from Holland, just in time for fall planting. The sale features pre-packaged collections for shade, deer resistance, naturalizing and continuous bloom. Garden horticulturists and staff offer practical tips and demonstrations on bulb selection and planting.
Roadside Flower Sale

Chicago Botanic Garden volunteers host the 26th annual Roadside Flower Salea display and sale of natural, handmade plant and floral arrangements. This one-of-a-kind event showcases ideas on how to decorate indoors and make gifts from the Garden's specially collected dried flowers, pods and grasses. More than 400 flower arrangements, wreaths, potpourris, montages and notecards are available for purchase.

Lakeshore African Violet Society Show & Sale

Among the daintiest and most vivid petite flowering houseplants, African violets are treasured for their ease of growing, continuous blooms and heartiness. This event features more than 100 judged exhibits. African violets and supplies will be sold, and a program with advice on growing and propagation will be offered throughout the show.
