I spent 20 years as a ship's captain, cruising the Gulf of Mexico and Caribbean. Everyone has the dream of the deserted tropical island. Lying on a hammock with a beautiful native girl popping grapes in your mouth and catering to your every whim. Years ago, that dream was found in the Caribbean, but population and "progress" have all-but negated that dream. You can still live that dream, which is why 1 Dream Getaway exists. Prostitutes are everywhere, and our clients do not need to come to Costa Rica to get laid. By matching you with the right companion, the right resort, and the right location, we can provide your dream for a week. But we always hope it will be for a lifetime. Sometimes it is. As proud parents, we cannot resist using our influence with 1 Dream Getaway to publish this photo of baby Kathy taken just before her first birthday. Her father was nearly bald for the first two years of his life, and it looks like she will be the same. But she is walking and talking. We have spouses coming whose 15th anniversary coincides with Kathy's birthday, and so are planning a joint party. Life is good..

I am at an age (56) where most men are enjoying their grandchildren and dreaming of retirement. Yet at 8 months pregnant, Dinorah was climbing mountains, checking out new resorts and activities, and then giving me a massage before I went to sleep. I cannot remember the last time I dried myself after a shower, put on my own socks, or tied my own shoes. This is something you don't find in most other places of the world. This is why 1 Dream Getaway exists, and I wish this for each and every one of you. I have seen it happen to some of you. Our website tries to explain that there are two Costa Rica's. Certainly many Gringos come to San Jose to drink, gamble, screw---and even live, and find their life there. On my first trip to Costa Rica I took the City Tour in San Jose, where they explained that the steel bars in the yards and on the windows of the houses was a leftover from Spanish architecture. The guide explained that every Tico receives an email address at birth, and can go to the Post Office to use the computer and send/receive emails. Although the Costa Rican claim that our illiteracy rate is much lower than that of the United States is true, their claim that every Tico learns English, French and Italian in school is utter BS. It is also unfortunate that there are no libraries, and the only things to read are newspapers, magazines and the Bible.

And so we at 1 Dream Getaway have clients who read the books and study what is said about Costa Rica, and decide they can do better on their own. We choose resorts that are not normally on the Costa Rica tour menu. One client was booked into a resort where Nora and I frequently went for lunch. We would leave our wallets, camera, and belongings on the restaurant table as we used the pool or went on the beach---never giving a thought to their safety. But this client found a website of a popular resort frequented by Gringos (a 20 minute walk on the beach from where we had him booked), and asked us to check it out. Our client did not believe us when we advised how much time and aggravation is saved by flying into Liberia International Airport (LIR)---as opposed to flying into San Jose (SJO) airport. He does now. Aside from the Delta flights from Atlanta, there are now Continental flights to LIR from Houston. During his all-too-brief vacation; we watched the lava flow from the volcano. We rode the rainforests and beaches on horses, and did a Canopy Tour (ask us if you don't know). We didn't get the Papagayo Bay tour on jet skis. Maybe next time.

Now Let Us Take A Minute To Tell You About Traveling To Costa Rica

Costa Rica is a small, extremely exotic and beautiful country. It is a destination with much to offer the visitor. Principal among the reasons to visit Costa Rica is the friendly, educated population. We have a 90 per cent literacy rate. Costa Rica offers a rich natural environment with a wide variety of habitats to explore and experience. Except for a few locations in the mountains and some city streets at mid day, it is never really hot or really cold. The vast majority of houses in Costa Rica do not have glass windows or air conditioning.

Whatever fears you might acquire from reading about Central America, be assured that Costa Rica is quite a different and unique country. It is one the oldest democracies in the Americas, and is a free and independent republic. Since 1948 we have enjoyed complete political stability with a long-standing commitment to democratic freedom. Ticos (Costa Rican men and women) are among the most patriotic peoples in the world. Peace is Costa Rica’s most valued feature. We have no army, and pride ourselves in dedicating our resources to helping people rather than killing them. In this troubled world, Costa Rica is among the few places without a State Department Travel Warning.

Costa Rica has approximately 3 1/2 million inhabitants---most of whom live in the "Central Valley" (San Jose), where there is a cooler climate and constant rain for 5 months per year. We at Dream Getaways concentrate our business in the true paradise of Costa Rica---far away from the crowded cities. The native language is Spanish. Other languages such as English, German, and Italian are spoken in some areas. Foreign visitors will easily be able to make themselves understood. Tourism is the livelihood of Costa Ricans, and communicating with us can be a fun experience in itself.

Local and international services are available at both state and private banking institutions. The official currency is the colon and the exchange rate against the dollar can vary. In July, 2003, the exchange rate is approximately $1US = 400 Costa Rican Colons. International credit cards are accepted in most establishments throughout the country and ATMs can be found in most areas. 1 Dream Getaway resorts have phones and cable TV in the rooms, along with Internet services. You can also purchase a phone card, which inserts into the pay phones for local or international calling. There is only one area code (506), and so no long distance calls within Costa Rica. The public telephones have buttons to select languages, but if you do not know any Spanish, solicit help. Ticos are always friendly and eager to assist.

Being located in the very center of the isthmus of Central America, Costa Rica holds a privileged place in the world. It is flanked to the east by the Caribbean, to the west by the Pacific Ocean, to the north by Nicaragua and to the south by Panama. Until about the time of the American Civil War, Guanecaste (where Dream Getaways is located) was a part of Nicaragua---and so the people, the cultures and the life is quite different from what the travel guides say about Costa Rica. The total surface area is only 20,000 square miles, but it contains a wide variety of rivers, plains, mountains, valleys, volcanoes, beaches and forests. In fact, Costa Rica has more rivers (for its size) than any country in the world. Costa Rica is a exotic tropical paradise. Lake Nicaragua is the largest lake in the world, and Dream Getaway can arrange day (or overnight) trips to that country also.

Regardless of what travel guides and maps may say, the streets in Costa Rica do not have names and addresses are only understood by the locals. However anyone you stop on the street will take as much time as necessary helping you get to your destination (in Spanish). I have had people walk many blocks out of their way to take me to the exact place I was looking for. 1 Dream Getaway eliminates the need for this, and you will never be lost or waste valuable vacation time trying to get somewhere. If you do wind up lost in some strange place, Costa Rica is among the few places in the world where you do not have to fear for your safety or well-being. Dream Getaways will not take you to the places where this does not hold true.

The entry requirements vary depending on which country you are a citizen. Those arriving from the following countries may visit Costa Rica for up to 90 days without a visa, however a passport is required: Argentina, Austria, Canada, Columbia, Denmark, Finland, Germany, Israel, Italy, Japan, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Norway, Panama, Romania, South Korea, Spain, Untied Kingdom, United States, Yugoslavia.

Those arriving from the following countries may visit for up to 30 days without a visa, however a passport is required: Australia, Belgium, Brazil, Ecuador, Guatemala, Honduras, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Mexico, Monaco, New Zealand, Sweden, Switzerland, Vatican, Venezuela.

Those arriving from the following countries may visit Costa Rica for up to 30 days with a passport and visa: Andorra, Barbados, Belize, Bermuda, Bolivia, Chile, Cyprus, Dominican Republic, Grenada, Grenadines, Greece, Guadalupe, Guyana, Haiti, Malta, Martinique, Morocco, Paraguay, Peru, San Marion, St. Lucia, St. Vincent, Saudi Arabia, Surinam, Taiwan, Trinidad, and Tobago, Uruguay, Jamaica
