A local legend, this sandwich haven has been stuffing Northwestern students and other in-the-know sandwich lovers since the 1940s. Part of the old-fashioned charm of this family-run deli is the great care given to everything, from the sandwiches to the hand-drawn menus to the homemade brownie cookies. Small marble tables allow you to take a seat, and miniature French flags hint at the deli’s culinary influence. There are many sandwiches from which to choose, and you can have them on a baguette (an Al’s specialty) or seven-grain bread, piled high with lettuce, tomato, mayo and mustard. Try the roast beef with blue cheese dressing; the dressing is homemade, of course. Or sink your teeth into a turkey croissant with bearnaise sauce; brie on a baguette with lettuce, tomato and onion; and dill havarti on seven-grain bread. The sandwiches cost just under $7, but you’ll want to bring a little extra for one of the insanely addictive brownie or butter cookies. Located a short walk away from the north end of the Northwestern University campus.

The Evanston Farmer’s Market, located on the corner of Maple Avenue and University Place behind the Hilton Garden Inn, offers visitors a glimpse into local farming and produce. For over 28 years, the Evanston Farmers’ Market has been a crowd-pleaser with 30+ vendors of fruit, vegetables, meat, flowers, cheese and bakery items. Hard-to-get items like fresh herbs, shallots, heirloom tomatoes, home-grown peppers, farmer’s cheese, and gourds are in abundance. The vendors are friendly and helpful, and the prices are very low for the quality.

The market is a great place to take the kids it’s down the street from Century 12 Theaters and a myriad of dining options. It’s definitely a sight to behold. Being a favorite of locals, you owe yourself a visit. Tip: Always attempt to bargain with the farmers!
If you’re taking the El, get off at the Davis stop on the purple line and walk northwest. The market is open every Saturday, from May 20th to November 4th, 7:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Free parking is available down the street in the Maple Avenue Parking Garage.
