So Many Viruses
Tech Tips from Tech Pro Now

Everyone who spends any time on the internet knows about viruses by now,
and it seems that if we haven’t caught one our selves, someone in our home
has caught one for us.
It doesn't matter if you are computer savvy or not, it seems like there
is always a threat. But this is not a battle that we are unable to win.
Two years ago, my computer was riddled with various viruses that I had contracted
from downloading my favorite music files.
My computer was giving me popup's that I would be ashamed to even have my
dog see. My computer shut down at random, and everything was so slow, that
sending an email was slower than hand delivering a hand written letter across
town.
So after doing a lot of research on viruses and products made to eliminate
them. I tried them. I tried all of the free virus protectors, and then the
many of the paid anti-virus programs.
What I realized, is that the free ones often out performed the paid software,
and programs such as AVG not only did a better job, but strained my computer
less.
So now I stick with AVG by Grisoft,
and I use ZoneAlarm as a firewall. Both are free products, and my system has been clean ever since.
Another valuable lesson that I learned, is that before opening up a file
that you have downloaded, use your virus protection to scan it first. If
you scan it first, you will know if it is safe to open the file or not. The
virus does not become active, until the file becomes active.
For instance, if you download a music file, scan it with virus protection
before playing the song. It's fast and simple, and has saved me a lot of
time and frustration.
