Insurance change

The company that underwrites most of the state's hurricane insurance policies has become more selective about who it covers and tangled up some real estate deals in the process.

The Honolulu-based Zephyr Insurance Co. announced this month that it will not issue new policies for frame single-wall houses or any home built before 1981 that has not been retrofitted to meet building codes introduced in the 1990s.    Full Story »

Playing high school basketball is about more than just winning or losing. It's also about combining sports and academics as part of a player's overall education.

Pahoa's Jackie Ganiron is a sterling example of what a dedicated student athlete can accomplish in a prep career. In four years on the varsity, the 5-foot-1 senior has been as valuable to the Daggers as all-state players Keisha Kanekoa of Honokaa and Jazzmin Awa-Williams of Konawaena have been to their talented teams.

"Jackie has been the glue to everything for us," said veteran Pahoa coach Pete Brigoli after the Daggers dropped a 73-28 decision to Waiakea on Tuesday night at the Warriors Gym.
