Tripp -- You keep badmouthing
Michigan and Ted Nugent might come looking for his next trophy.
By the way, what's the record for Detroit burning in one calendar year? Does it all depend upon the Pistons and the Wings ? Or does that matter?
Michigan's state bird
Many may not know this, but our state bird is actually the mosquito. Afterall, there are only two seaons; shovel and swat ;-).
LOL
Thanks Greg! Like I said I almost bought property in the U.P. I used to tent camp on state land up there along the river. The Bald Eagles nesting were an awesome sight, but waking up to moose in your face on a frosty morning, 20 racoons the size of german shepards attacking your camp, cougars, and not to mention wolves, I have never run across a bear, they must hang out at the state parks in Michigan (smart bears).
I remember washing my hair in the Taqua River one year and the Crawfish must have thought my hair was seaweed, they came out of nowhere, we grabbed a big pot, scooped them up and had a great dinner. Good Times! I also got a really good tan that year a coundn't figure out why, we stayed in the tent most of the time the black flies were so bad. The local bartender said "you've been bathing in the river", of course I was, the tannic acid had dyed my skin.
By the way, Thanks Sherm, I think I can get the photos to work now.
BRAVE MAN !!!
Just seen a chap in an open back pick up...in a SHORT SLEEVE TOP !!!!!AT 34f your a hardy lot !!! it has to be 70 for me to wear a short top, here in spain were not hardy at all ....all the snows gone now i see..is that early or late for it to clear ? ..
I wouldn't worry too much
about the Bears. They haven't been good since Ditka and the 'Fridge did the Shuffle.
And the Lions, Detroit's answer to the Boston Red Sox of old. Bobby Layne, Hopalong Cassidy, Dick "Night Train" Lane, and others.
I think if I was to take a Bear fishing it would be Mike Singletary because. . . .oops, wrong kind of bears? Sorry, I'm going to go hibernate for awhile.
BEAUTIFUL UNTAMED ALASKA...
"FROSTYVOICE" is right... my husband and I are old retirees... we took our second trip into the BEAUTIFUL GREAT STATE OF ALASKA "armed" only with our "Milepost" and two SPOILED ROTTEN Black Lab. GIRLS that sleep more than they "guard". "GUARDING" is a word that doesn't fit into their "job description" well ... so they DON'T. We were out and about traveling the various country roads. We TRIED to be aware of everything that has going on around us, although it's difficult because you just CAN'T HELP enjoying the peaceful surroundings. My husband found a "picture perfect" setting among the trees along a crystal clear running stream on the Kenai Pennisula south of Anchorage. He decided he just HAD TO TRY out his FLY FISHING abilities for awhile. All went well as we wandered around and through the bushes along the creek. As we approached our parked motorhome WE WERE STUNNED when we turned, to see a small bear on the trail we had just gotten off of! It appeared to have been FOLLOWING US! We quickly jumped in the truck and moved on, but we recalled the "feelings" we had, just SEEING that bear and knowing it had been following us and we never knew it!!! WE WERE LUCKY... we've learned to PAY CLOSER ATTENTION to WHAT'S on the trail BEHIND US and in front of us from now on. We're planning to return to "the Last Frontier" in 2007.
BLINDFOLDED
Sherbear,
Alaska welcomes the new but besides purchasing a Milepost, if driving you should do what I just did. I read the article, that see8see recommended below. "I Walked Into The Wilderness" The events took place about 30 miles in from where you passed on your trip here, just before Clear/Nenana.
When it is said the untamed beauty of Alaska, they mean untamed!
Have a safe trip and ain't Sherm the best! He got my Dog Team on this page, when I couldn't I wish you many happy years in "The Last Frontier"

Hey Tripp
It has always been my dream to move to the Yukon, but I never thought it would be a reality, besides I would rather stay in the U.S.
About 20 years ago I did have property waiting for me in Paradise, MI. But my parents talked me into keeping their house here. Ah Well, Everything happens for a reason.
How much closer can you get to the Yukon, than Fairbanks! Now I have the chance to make it a reality! By the way, I love the winter and the snow!
Move UP
Detroit is a nasty city, but why move all the way to Alaska when you could just move to the UP? Actually Sherbear, many if not most of the Michiganders you may meet in Fairbanks will be yoopers. At least, this has been my experience. Only a few so far have been from my area near Detroit.
Also, did you write an email to the Fairbanks Linux Users Group some time ago?
SEAN PENN MOVIE
"Curiosty Killed THe Cat" Not so in my case. after reading the Dermot Cole article, on line, about Sean Penn's visit, I had to find more about what the movie was based on.
Whether you are a Alaska resident or a future visitor, I recommend an article that was written my a Chip Brown called "I Walk Into The Wild". It was published in The New Yorker, Feb 8th, 1993 and can be found at www.chipbrown.net/articles/intothewild.htm.
Besides a great story, it makes you want to, always be prepared c8c
Pix Posting 101
Sherbear. It looks like you'll be on this board for quite some time so, if you are really interested in posting pictures, drop me an email and I'll talk you through it. There's a little more to it then what you saw around Christmas. I'm at danca77@earthlink.net
Hey!
Thanks Sherm, how did you do that? We tried cut and paste, photobucket, word, I even attempted to look up an explanation I remember seeing around Christmas time.
Your right Greg and Tripp. I will probably never retire, but I'm looking at getting out of Michigan and Florida is way to hot! I love the climate just not the environment here. I will be so glad to make the move there in July. I didn't want to come back home. It reminds me of where my relatives lived in rural Indiana, oh how I loved to be there.
Michiganders, eh?
When I first moved to Alaska I was a little suprised to see how many former Michiganders live there. I suppose we are attracted by the climate.
Thanks for the pics, Sherbear
Living in Florida, used to live in Detroit as well. Near Redford High School. Used to work on the corner of Telegraph and Grand River many years ago.
Thanks again for the pics !!
p.s. Did you get to watch any Northern Lights while you were up there?
oh well
I couldn't get the pictures to work so my daughter in florida posted them at the website below. I have more maybe I can post them at the Fairbanks Friends site.
