MEETING TIME & PLACE: Meet us at our Orange Torpedo
Trips/White Water Cowboys office and warehouse at 210 Merlin
Rd. in Merlin, OR at 6:30 a.m. We are located one exit north
of Grants Pass off of I-5. Take exit #61 and go 3.5 miles west
to downtown Merlin. Our Office is the large blue warehouse
on the right side of the road across the street from the post
office (our sign says White Water Cowboys). If you do not have
transportation to our office, we can pick you up at your Grants
Pass hotel at 6:45 a.m. Or, we will meet you at the Windmill
Inn (Roseburg Exit #125) at 8:00 a.m. Please let us
know as soon as possible if you will need transportation from
your
hotel. |
|
|
ACCOMMODATIONS: For convenience we have also
listed several Grants Pass and Roseburg motels below. Please
identify yourself as an OTT guest when making your reservations.
Advance reservations are suggested.
AIRLINES: If you're planning to fly to our area, United
Airlines, United Express (800-241-6522), and Horizon Air
(800-547-9308) land in Medford, 30 miles south of Grants
Pass. We suggest you make airline reservations well in advance.
Airport Transit Service will provide transportation to your
motel in Grants Pass for a small charge. To assure space
in the shuttle van, phone (541) 479-3217 for reservations.
The van parks in front of the baggage pick-up room and is
well marked for Grants Pass.
Sorry, but unless airline schedules change, we return too
late the final day to meet the last flights out. There are
several early flights the following morning, however. The
Airport Transit Service can also provide transportation from
your motel to the airport.
Guests flying by private plane should plan to land at the
Josephine County Airport in Merlin, or at the Municipal Airport
in Roseburg (if flying in from the north).
TRIP ITINERARY: Guests and guides will meet at the office/warehouse
in Merlin at 6:30 a.m., or at the Windmill Inn in Roseburg
at approximately 8:00 a.m., unless other arrangements are
made. Travel time to the put-in is approximately 2 hours
from Grants Pass. Have a substantial breakfast as it will
be a long time until lunch.
Your first day of the North Umpqua Thriller begins near
Steamboat Inn (approximately 36 miles east of Roseburg).
The river is characterized by swift current, crystal clear
water, and nearly continuous activity in moderate-sized waves
among numerous rocks and other obstacles. There will be ample
time this evening and the following morning to fish or enjoy
Steamboat Inn or other condominium accommodations in the
surrounding area.
On day two, we will enjoy exciting whitewater obstacles
that will challenge even the most experienced OTT "veteran
guests".
The last day finds us kayaking a section of river situated
in a narrow gorge. The rapids are relatively short, but feature
steep drops that vary in difficulty, some of which require
precise maneuvering between rocks and holes. A late lunch
will be served at the take-out prior to our scenic drive
back to the Roseburg/Grants Pass areas.
We will be lodging at the Steamboat Inn on both nights of
the trip which eliminates the need for packing your gear
in a dry bag. If Steamboat Inn is not available, we will
be staying at the Steelhead Run Inn.

TRANSPORTATION AND GENERAL INFORMATION
This trip begins and ends in Merlin, Oregon. You should plan
to arrive the day or evening before your trip date. At the
end of the trip, our vehicles will meet you at the take-out
for the return drive to Merlin (transport to the put-in and
from the take-out is included in your fare).
MEETING TIME AND PLACE: Meet us at our Orange Torpedo
Trips/White Water Cowboys office and warehouse at 210 Merlin
Rd. in Merlin, OR, at 8:30 am. We are located one exit
north of Grants Pass off of I-5 (exit #61) and 3.5 miles
west to downtown Merlin. Our office is the large blue warehouse
on the right side of the road across the street from the
post office (our sign says White Water Cowboys). If you
need to be picked up at your hotel trip morning, please
give our office a call for special shuttle arrangements.
AIRLINES: If you're planning to fly to our area United
Airlines, United Express (800-241-6522) America West, and
Horizon Air (800-547-9308) land in Medford, 30 miles south
of Grants Pass. We suggest you make airline reservations
well in advance. Four car rental agencies are located at
the Medford terminal (Budget, Avis, National, and Hertz).
Airport Transit Service will provide transportation to
your motel in Grants Pass for a small fee. To assure space
in the shuttle van, phone (541) 479-3217 for reservations.
The van parks in front of the baggage pick-up room and
is well marked for Grants Pass.
Guests flying by private plane should plan to land at
the Josephine County Airport in Merlin. Shuttles can be
arranged through Affordable Shuttle (541) 479-1042, or
we can pick you up there on trip morning.
PLACES TO STAY: If you plan to camp while you're here,
we recommend Indian Mary Park (541) 474-5285. The nearest
R.V. Park is Beaver Creek RV (541) 479-7445, on Merlin
Rd., although Indian Mary Park also provides full R.V.
hook-ups. We have a parking lot that will accommodate RV's
while you are on your trip. A list of motels, hotels, and
Bed & Breakfasts are on the next page.
PACKING YOUR GEAR: On trip morning, you only need take
essential river gear with you on the river, (i.e. water
bottle, hat, sunglasses, sunscreen, camera, etc). All the
rest of your personal belongings can stay in the shuttle
vehicle or be left at our warehouse, and will be transported
to the lodge.
TRIP ITINERARY
Guests and guides meet at our warehouse in Merlin at 8:30
a.m. We will have a brief orientation for inflatable
kayakers and paddle rafters at the river, prior to putting
on the water at Robertson Bridge. You will cover 14 miles
of class I - II+ white water during the course of the
day. This is an excellent introductory trip for first
time kayakers. You will paddle through moderate stretches
of white water, calm pools, experience an abundance of
wild life, and float through Hell Gate Canyon (featured
in the movie River Wild).
For those not wishing to paddle their own kayak or join
a group in a paddle raft, oared rafts are available upon
request. Each large raft will hold 4 to 6 adults. An all
you can eat BBQ lunch will be served mid day at Indian
Mary Park. After lunch, you will continue down river. The
rapids pick up considerably in the second half of the day.
Cameras are encouraged, as there are some great photo opportunities
along this stretch, and our guides will be happy to work
with you in getting good vacation shots of the family rafting
the Rogue. After a full day on the water, you will reach
the take-out around 4:30 p.m. Vans will be there to transport
you to Morrison's Lodge where you will stay in cabins near
the river and dine on gourmet meals.
On day two, we will pick you up at the lodge at approximately
6:30 a.m. to begin our journey on the beautiful North Umpqua
River. Travel time to the put-in is approximately 2.5 hours
from the lodge. Morrison's will provide you with a boxed
breakfast and coffee for the ride to the river.
On the North Umpqua, the rapids are relatively short,
but feature steep drops that vary in difficulty, some of
which require precise maneuvering between rocks and holes.
The length and location of our North Umpqua run will vary
depending on water conditions. We have designed day two
of this trip as a challenging run and remain flexible with
changing conditions to ensure the best whitewater. We will
enjoy a late lunch before packing up and heading back to
Grants Pass around 3:30 p.m.
