Cocktails have pretty much become a way of life in Las Vegas. That being the case it was only a matter of time before a museum was designed to pay homage to the history of cocktails. That time is now and the place is the Desert Passage mall.
Originally located in New Orleans, the Museum of the American Cocktail has made its way to Las Vegas after being displaced by Hurricane Katrina. The non profit is dedicated towards the preservation and public education of the cocktail.
The exhibit will trace the past 20 years of the cocktail's history running from the first straw and running up to the Golden Era (1950-1990's). Other side exhibits include tributes to tropical drinks and drinks that were born in the New Orleans area.
Items are donated to the museum from the private collections of the museum founders as well as members on the museum board. Memorabilia includes shakers, barware, bottles, advertisements, decanters and literature from the Prohibition era. One of the oldest and most interesting pieces is a distiller's manual from 1797.
For those that want to learn a little more, the museum will offer a seminar series. Topics will be rotated on a monthly basis and include topics such as what goes into a cocktail, classic cocktails that can be made at home and a celebration of the cocktail's 200th birthday. During each seminar, a six course cocktail dinner will be served and will feature things such as Louisana crawfish ceviche, Creole spiced Gulf shrimp and Drunken Quail.
For those that can't get enough of the cocktail, or those that just want to learn a little bit more about its beginnings, the Museum of American Cocktails is a must see.
