In 1986, Barrington Tops gained World Heritage Listing and more recently much of the area has been declared Wilderness. This twenty-five-kilometre long plateau extends between a series of extinct volcanic peaks in the Mount Royal Ranges.
Gloucester Tops is one of the most accessible locations in this World Heritage Area. The grandeur of the beech forest, the walking trails through meadows and woodlands and fast-flowing streams feature in this treasured area.
Both areas offer visitors opportunity for activity and adventure. The circuit of the Barrington Tops Plateau can be completed by well-equipped bushwalkers in two or three days. Expeditions down the Barrington River offer adventure to canoeists. Mountain trails and roadways offer cyclists a range of opportunities
Antarctic beech forest, subtropical and temperate rainforest, snow gum, alpine meadows, sphagnum moss swamps – an array of habitats found in the Barrington Tops that nurtures half of the plant species found in Australia and over one-third of its mammals and birds.
