The
Miami Outboard Club was founded in April of 1938 with the general purpose
and object of the furtherance of boating and all of its allied activities;
and to foster a spirit of friendship and fellowship. In January 2000, the
Miami Outboard Club Youth Foundation, a non-profit organization under
section 501 (C)(3), was founded.
The purpose of the foundation is to provide the youth in the
community, educational programs, instruction and activities related to
fishing including tag and release, boating, swimming, scuba diving, and
other nautical and water related activities.
Since its inception, the Youth Foundation has assisted in
community events sponsored by the Miami Outboard Club. These events
include several fishing tournaments each year for kids from the Model City
Neighborhood Enhancement Team. Kids board a chartered boat for a day of
fishing and upon returning they are treated to lunch and receive awards
and gifts.
The Youth Foundation also assists with the club’s yearly Senior
Citizens Thanksgiving Dinner and Senior Citizens Christmas Party. For
these events, busses are sent out to pick up seniors from several low
income housing complexes in the Miami area who are treated to dinner,
music, and gifts.
Another event in which the Youth Foundation takes part is
the Baynanza Cleanup Day.Club
members and their families donate their time and vessels to pick up kids
and transport them to and from different locations around Biscayne Bay
where they help in the clean up of those areas.
During the month of December, there are several activities.
The Junior Orange Bowl Parade where kids ride a float with a marine life
theme, and the Miami Outboard Club Holiday Boat Parade, where the kids
assist in the decoration of some of the boats, are among them.
There are many other activities planned for the future such
as swimming and boating instruction for youths and a summer camp. These will require an investment in equipment and facilities and to
that end, the Youth Foundation has been gathering funds through donations
from club members, corporations, and organizations.
