Research
"The creation and communication of knowledge
is at the heart of every research university, and a great research university,
like Stanford, aspires to create knowledge that will benefit our society." --
President John Hennessy
Schools, Departments and Interdisciplinary
Programs
The synthesis of teaching and research
is fundamental to Stanford University. All faculty engage in scholarly
research, most often in association with graduate students or advanced
undergraduates. Much of this research takes place in Stanford's
schools, departments
and interdisciplinary programs.
Research Centers and Institutes
Several national research centers are located
on the campus, including the
Center for Advanced Study in the Behavioral Sciences, the National
Bureau of Economic Research and the Stanford
Linear Accelerator Center (SLAC). Numerous other research centers
and institutes are listed here by subject: engineering,
humanities, medicine,
sciences and social
sciences. Complete listing
Multidisciplinary Research
Stanford has a long tradition of cross-disciplinary collaboration
to produce the best and most innovative of basic and applied
research. Today, with the establishment of multidisciplinary initiatives in a
wide array of fields, Stanford is reaffirming this commitment. The Bio-X program,
housed at the Clark
Center, brings biology, engineering,
medicine, and the basic sciences to bear on some of the most daunting health
problems of our time. The Stanford
Institute for the Environment mobilizes faculty
from all of Stanford's schools to address critical environment and
natural resource issues, including climate change, biodiversity, conservation,
and public health. The Stanford
International Initiative brings together researchers
and scholars from a broad range of disciplines to explore some of the most pressing
international challenges of our day, such as peace and security, health, and
the global economy. You can read more about these and a myriad of other interdisciplinary
activities at Stanford in the Multidisciplinary
Learning at Stanford website.
Libraries
Stanford University
Libraries contain more than 8 million volumes and maintain an online catalog
called Socrates.
Offices & Resources
Faculty and student research is supported
by numerous offices, including the Office
of Research Administration and the Dean
of Research office, which maintains the Research
Policy Handbook. The Undergraduate
Research Programs office links students with research opportunities
across campus and offers grants to defray the cost of research.
