About Auvergne
On Sundays in the summer local villages hold ‘Brocantes’ a cross between a car boot sale and antique market, lots of ‘rubbish’ but plenty of excellent bargains to be had.
Our nearest town is MONTMARAULT 9km away with supermarket, shops, banks, restaurants, bars and doctors. The main A71 route goes to this town.
LAPEYROUSE: Nearby man-made lake and beach, ideal for the family with swimming, fishing and pedallos. VUCANIA VOLCANO PARK: descend to the depths of a crater to the centre of the earth. PUY DE DOME: breathtaking views from this chain of extinct volcanoes, try paragliding and hang-gliding with qualified professionals. GORGES de CHOUVIGHNY and SIOULE GORGES: Kayaking, canoeing and beautiful walks.
VICHY: water skiing on Lake Allier, thermal spa treatments in this most famous spa town. NERIS LES BAINS: spa town and public baths. 18 hole golf course and practice. BOURBON L’ARCHAMBAULT: fortress built before the ‘100 years was’. Visitors can still explore it’s imposing remains.
SOUVIGNY: one of the most beautiful churches in the land of the Bourbon dukes. St POURCAIN: vineyard on the banks of the Allier one of the oldest in France. LE PAL: Animal and theme park. The park has no less than 500 different animals plus water, rail and air attractions.
MOULINS: Capital of the Allier, visit the historical parts of this city, cathedrals and museums. Also the ALLIER VALLEY NATURE CENTRE: discover and learn about the natural heritage of the Allier Valley. Over 100 species of nesting birds. 250 species observed.
CHARROUX: one of the most beautiful villages in France.
MONTLUCON: home to the Bourbon Dukes, historic centre and museums. TRONCAIS FORESTS: With 10,000 hectares it the largest Oak plantation in Europe and probably the world, dawn or dusk guided tours.
The Gîte and Cottage are ideally situated to be a base for those searching for a property in the region. At your request we would be delighted to introduce you to an excellent French Estate Agency who offers a first class service plus English speaking staff.

Welcome to La Saule Tordue
The Auvergne region is described as a paradise of open space and its several hundred red volcanoes have created scenery of immense beauty. Water falls, lakes and rivers are in abundance and the area is a strategic point for many migratory birds, including Kestrels, Red Kites and Buzzards which fly overhead during the spring and summer.
La Saule Tordue is situated in the south of the Allier region in a small hamlet with only local traffic and tractors. The area is rural and 500 m above sea level which offers great views. Ideal for ramblers and nature lovers.
We are an English family and on our small farm we keep chickens, goats, ducks, pet rabbits and hopefully in the near future donkeys.
All our visitors have access to the rest of our property which includes a meadow and grass area for ball games.
