MarlboroughMarlborough is located close to the heart of New Zealand, on the north-east corner of the South Island. It is an unspoilt hideaway steeped in history - the Marlborough waters played host to Maori traders and war parties then explorers like Captain James Cook and Dumont d'Urville. These days Marlborough is home to visitors seeking a retreat from city pressures. It is New Zealand's largest winemaking region - specialising in Sauvignon Blanc with around 65 wineries and over 4000 hectares planted in grapes near the city of Blenheim. Aquaculture is also an important industry for the region, producing Greenshell mussels, oysters, salmon, paua and fresh water crayfish. Visitors can be kept busy (when not drinking wine!) by walking the Queen Charlotte Track which curls around the coves and inlets and along skyline ridges between the breathtaking Kenepuru and Queen Charlotte Sounds. Marlborough is home to treasured bird and sealife - terns, shags, herons, blue penguins, dolphins, seals and native forest birds. The small seaside town of Picton is also docking point for the Picton to Wellington ferry - the Interislander.
