An attractive complex of 3 charming gites, lovingly restored from barns and chais (wine stores), set in a hamlet surrounded by vineyards and sunflowers in the gentle rolling hills of the Charente on its border with the Charente Maritime. Full of character features including beautiful beams and exposed stonework, the gites have been refurbished in 2004 and have all new equipment and furniture. They are set in large attractive lawned gardens with a 6mx12m fenced pool. One gite sleeps 6 in 3 bedrooms (2 shower rooms and WCs), and the other two sleep 2 each (all gites have room for a cot or a single folding bed). Each is completely self-contained and has its own sunny, secluded, patio with BBQ and are suitable for both individual lets and for extended family holidays/groups of friends travelling together, giving a total capacity of 10/12 (at reduced prices - please enquire with owners). Good shops and restaurants less than 10 minutes away.

Chez Chaillou is based in a lovely hamlet in the gentle rolling hills of the Charente, on its border with the Charente Maritime, benefiting from its sunny micro climate. The hamlet, with baker and tennis court, is surrounded by vineyards and fields of sunflowers, and we provide a friendly welcome and home from home comfort in a beautiful and peaceful atmosphere. This area has many activities to suit all ages and tastes. The nearest large town, Barbezieux, is 6 km away, with supermarkets, a full range of shops and numerous excellent restaurants. Cognac and Angouleme are within 30 minutes drive, as are several bathing lakes and the beautiful River Charente. The pretty town of Jonzac, 15 minutes away, provides an excellent adventure park and bathing pool for children, horse-riding, a superb themed indoor leisure complex, thermal baths (specialising in treatment of rheumatic and respiratory problems), and hot air balloon rides. Nearby is a small country zoo, many pretty villages and numerous tasting and buying opportunities associated with the local wine and brandy trade. The Atlantic coast is 40 minutes away, with some superb beaches and resorts, and the fascinating theme park at Futurescope is within easy reach for a day out. La Rochelle and Bordeaux airports, both served by low cost carriers, are within an 1 ¼ hr, and the Western channel ports all within an easy drive.

The gites are in the grounds of (but out of sight of, to ensure your privacy!) the English owners' Charentaise stone house. They have been converted from a large barn (La Grange) and two wine stores (Chai and Le Lavandou). All are newly and comfortably furnished, and well equipped with full cooker, microwave, toaster, fridge/freezer and CD system. La Grange has a dishwasher and an additional fridge, with a separate freezer. Each has a large secluded West facing patio, with sunloungers and dining table and chairs with BBQ, leading up to the large lawned gardens containing a 12mx6m pool, shared by the gites (and occasionally the owners!). A selection of books and various games are provided, and the owner provides a welcome grocery pack. The gites are all different in size and characater but all retain many original features and have, according to our guests in 2004, the "wow" factor! Heating is included in the price from October to April.

Entering from a large patio through French doors is a pretty comfortable sitting area with woodburner. Up 3 large oak steps to the kitchen area, with dining table and chairs. A short but steep staircase leads up to the sunny mezzanine bedroom and WC/shower-room. ----------------------------------------------------

Charming very large studio style gite with spacious living/dining area with well equipped kitchen corner. Romantic curtained off sleeping area and bathroom containing large shower, WC and hand basin. Lovely sunny patio.

Large living/dining area, with huge French doors to patio, leads to spacious kitchen area and WC. One double bedroom downstairs with en suite shower room, one double upstairs with wash basin, and one room upstairs with a 4ft double and a single bed. Both double rooms have space for a cot or additional folding bed. Further shower room and WC upstairs.
