NEW YEAR'S EVE IN NAPLES is certainly a moment worthy of living. Friendly and magic atmosphere roll up the entire city giving to the people a sensation of gaiety and strong expectations for the beginning of the New Year. As in the best pagan traditions, the ceremony of New Years' Eve in Naples is a real gift for the people who can finally forget all the daily problems and wait for the magic midnight toast followed by an unforgettable fireworks show. Capodanno in Naples is liven up by the sounds of zampogne (similar to bagpipes) that is brought by the zampognari tiill the interior of buildings; in the streets there's plenty of stalls selling typical sweets and the capitone (a type of eel) that is of good omen for the New Year. Many popular believes and supersitions accompany the moment of the dinner that is basicly composed by seafood courses, cothechino with lentils and zampone that tradition wants to be bearers of welth. Tombola is almost a must before and after dinner that in Naples is also recited as every number is associated to a symbol acted by the reader. Midnight is surely the most fascinating moment as all the people goes out on their balconies to light small rockets and fireworks. The result is something amazing and impossible to imagine as the city seems besieged and it's impossible to walk on the streets unless you're in a safe zone as the squares. Once the people of Naples used to say goodbye to the old year throwing out of the windows all the old staff the had at home. Bathtub and washing machines have been found as well. So the suggestion for New Years' Eve in Naples is to choose among 2 possibilities: stay at home partying with family and frineds or go to the main square like Piazza del Plebiscito to see concerts and fireworks.
