Ex-Forest Service chiefs criticize land sale plan
Email to a Friend Printer Friendly Version

WASHINGTON Four men who once ran the U-S Forest Service are blasting President Bush's plan to sell national forest land to pay for rural schools.

The Bush administration submitted legislation to Congress today which would allow it to sell more than 300-thousand acres of national forest and then funnel the 800 (m) million dollars in proceeds to help pay for rural schools in 41 states.

The retired chiefs, both Democrats and Republicans, say the land sale is a "slippery slope" and "an unwise precedent."

Administration officials say it's been done before. And they say the parcels to be sold are isolated, expensive to manage or no longer meet forest system needs.
