May 6 - Taste Grand Opening

Sunday, April 30, 2006

Taste will hold its grand opening May 6 as part of the San Luis Obispo Vintners Association's two-day annual Roll Out The Barrels celebration, with food samples from Chef Paul Kwan paired with local wines on the Court Street Terrace. Winemaker dinners and other special events are planned at member wineries throughout the weekend. Tickets for the passport event are $45 or $30 for designated drivers. For details, see www.slowine.com or call 541-5868.

The San Luis Obispo association's approach is based on a Cal Poly study that two years ago concluded fewer than 20 percent of visitors to downtown San Luis Obispo were aware of local wineries.

With fewer than 30 wineries in the region and 15 members, the association believes wooing potential customers from those who are already here is the most efficient way to build sales.

"Most of our tourists that visit San Luis are from Southern California," said Marco Rizzo, co-owner of Café Roma and Per Bacco Cellars. "They relax on the coast, explore, visit downtown. I don't think there are too many people who come up just for wine tasting."

Taste introduces them to member wineries and their wines. After sampling, some visitors buy bottles to take to nearby restaurants, said Jennifer Rucks, co-owner of Salisbury Vineyards, which opened in Avila last year.

"People are coming and buying more at the tasting room," she said.

To encourage customers to compare local wines to fine vintages from other regions, Taste plans to begin serving nine French wines, said Executive Director Becky Gray.

The innovative tasting room could even help put San Luis Obispo on the national wine map. According to Gray, the group has been approached by Wine Spectator magazine about a story on the venture.

PAC-5 League

After four PAC-5 League golf tournaments and one dual match between them, what separates Arroyo Grande and Righetti in the race for third place, and the last league playoff slot, is...nothing.

Righetti edged Arroyo Grande in a dual meet at Rancho Maria Golf Club Monday. Arroyo Grande finished third, one spot head of Righetti, at a PAC-5 League Meet Thursday at the same place.

Arroyo Grande and Righetti are tied for third in the league standings with nine points each. The Eagles shot 384 to the Warriors' 385 Thursday.

The season ends with a league tournament at San Luis Obispo and then the league finals at Cypress Ridge.

PAC-5 leader Paso Robles won the meet Thursday with a 373. That put them at 19 points to second-place Atascadero's 15. The Greyhounds finished second at 376 Thursday. San Luis Obispo was fifth in the five-team field with 405.

Kevin Sepulveda of Paso Robles and Bryan Pierce of Arroyo Grande were co-medalists Thursday. Both shot a 70 on the 18-hole course.

Los Padres League

Nipomo lengthened its lead in the Los Padres League standings by winning this league tournament at Alisal Ranch in Santa Ynez with a team score of 389.

Santa Ynez shot a 406 and narrowed its deficit against second-place St. Joseph which finished third Thursday at 437. Nipomo has 66 points in the league standings. St. Joseph has 52. Third-place Santa Ynez has 47.

Cabrillo finished fourth Thursday with a 439. Morro Bay was fifth at 465, Santa Maria finished sixth at 556, and Pioneer Valley was seventh at 573. Lompoc did not have enough golfers to score.

Cal Poly Wins Big West Championship

Wednesday, April 26, 2006

The Cal Poly Men's Golf team, which led by 12 strokes after Monday's 36 holes, added three strokes to the final margin on Tuesday to win the Big West Championship.

NCAA regional bids will be announced May 8. Cal Poly qualified for the regionals as a team a year ago following its second-place Big West men's finish. The 2006 West Regional will be held May 18-20 at the Tucson National Golf Club.

Travis Bertoni equalled the score he posted to win the 2005 Big West Conference men's golf individual championship.

Bertoni finished with a nine-under-par 207 total following a six-under-par 66 on the 6,918-yard, par-72 layout. It was Bertoni's 12th career round of 66; his personal record is a 65 accomplished twice, once as a sophomore in the Santa Clara Invitational and the other as a junior in the UCLA Gold Rush.

Bertoni, who had a 69 and a 72 on Monday, led Cal Poly to its first-ever Big West golf championship. The Mustangs carded a four-person, 54-hole, 11-under-par 853 total to beat UC Irvine by 15 strokes. Long Beach State was another four strokes back in third place.

After the tournament, Bertoni was named Big West Golfer of the Year for the third straight season.

The Mustang men lead the team standings after 36 holes by 12 strokes, carding a four-person three-under-par 573 total Monday. UC Irvine is second with a 585 total, followed by Cal State Northridge (588) and Long Beach State (589). There are seven schools competing in the men's tournament.

On the women's side, Cal Poly is last among five schools competing for the conference title. UC Irvine leads with a 15-over-par 591 total, 30 strokes ahead of Long Beach State. Cal Poly logged a 651 total.

Individual leader in the men's championship is Ryan Panichpakdee of Long Beach State with a six-under-par 138 total after carding rounds of 68 and 70. He is three strokes ahead of Cal Poly senior Travis Bertoni, bidding for his fourth win of the spring season and 12th of his Mustang career.

Bertoni shot rounds of 69 and 72 for a 141 total and is tied with Joe Ryon of UC Santa Barbara (70-71--141). Fourth place belongs to Derek Uyesaka with a 142 total.

Bertoni, a Paso Robles High School graduate, won the Big West individual title a year ago and is a two-time Big West Player of the Year.

Cal Poly, bidding for its first-ever Big West title, also placed J.J. Scurich, David Lewinski and Kevin O'Brien in the top eight Monday.

Scurich shot 70 and 74 for a 144 total and is in a tie for fifth place while Lewinski and O'Brien share eighth place with 146 totals. Lewinski shot a 74 in the morning and 72 in the afternoon while O'Brien was just one stroke off the lead after his 69 in the morning but carded a 77 in the afternoon.

Colin Peck shot 75 and 73 for a 148 total and is in a tie for 13th place.

Cal Poly's only golfer in the top 20 of the women's standings after 36 holes is Allison Wing, who carded an 81 and 77 for a 14-over-par 158 total, tied for 15th place.

Hannah Brabb (85-78--163) is in 22nd place, Jessica Huss (86-79--165) is 24th, Jilayne Lovejoy (83-85--168) is in a tie for 27th place and Kelly McEachern (84-84--168) also is tied for 27th place.

Final round for both the men and women is scheduled this morning.

SLO County Chardonnay Festival

Saturday, April 22, 2006

San Luis Obispo County is already known as one of the state's largest wine-producing regions. Soon, it could become one of the few places in the world to host a chardonnay festival.

Organizers of the proposed three-day event, which is being planned for Feb. 9-11, 2007, say they want the festival to have a "laid-back" feel, with visitors wearing flip-flops and Hawaiian shirts. Activities include winemaker dinners, a kayak trip followed by wine tasting on the dunes, biking, hiking, a private tour of Hearst Castle, a Saturday night party and open houses with barbecues on Sunday.

Nipool Patel, owner of Lamplighter Inn, and Shay Stewart of Central Coast Wine Tours, say they chose to host the event in the off-season because the Central Coast is not traditionally seen as a tourist destination that time of year. They hope to attract more than 350 visitors.

They are also targeting the Gen-X and Gen-Y crowds in an effort to build loyalty with that audience. Patel says people in those age groups have adventurous tastes and a penchant for "funky labels" in the medium-price range.

As well, Patel and Stewart hope to work with Cal Poly students on many aspects of planning and marketing the festival, expecting to return some of the proceeds to Cal Poly, possibly for scholarships.

They already have an event sponsor lined up and are looking for industry sponsors. Hundreds of wineries from Edna Valley to South Africa may be represented at the festival, which is being patterned after the annual Chardonnay du Monde festival in France.

For more information, call Stewart at 215-2317.

Straight Down's Mike Rowley featured in FORE Magazine

Friday, April 21, 2006

The March/April issue of the SCGA's FORE Magazine features San Luis Obispo's Mike Rowley, owner and founder of the golf apparel company Straight Down Clothing and host of the annual Straight Down Fall Classic at San Luis Obispo Country Club. Some excerpts from the article are included below.

Rowley, a San Luis Obispo resident, started the golf apparel company STRAIGHT DOWN CLOTHING in 1987, and ever since, the name has become synonymous with both quality and comfortable sportswear.

Rowley, a scratch golfer, inherited the golf itch from grandfather Lester Coleman, who taught him both the skill and meaning of the game. Coleman was a golfer himself, playing practice rounds with Bobby Jones and Ben Hogan, among others, while his brother, Fay, also worked at Brentwood and Los Angeles CCs, as wells as the now defunct Fox Hills CC (Fay was also the 1930 SCGA Amateur champion).

The golfer not only tackled the clothing world, but the tournament one as well. In addition to playing in a number of competitions, including the SCGA's Foursomes Championship, he actually started his own Straight Down Fall Classic, now in its ninth year and held at San Luis Obispo Country Club.

The invitation-only event, held the week after the PGA's Tour Championship, is highlighted by professionals such as John Daly, Fred Couples and long-time friend Loren Roberts, who sports the Straight Down logo on the Champions Tour. California's 1998 Amateur Champion, Ed Cuff, is a three-time winner of the pro/scratch player tournament, and Rowley, with partner and Tour player Roger Tambellini, won in both 1999 and 2002.

Roberts, also a Cal Poly alumnus, began wearing the product in July 2005, while Tambellini started in 1998. Nine others, including Mark Johnson, Don Pooley and Charley Hoffman, wear the Straight Down label as well.

"Now guys are wanting to wear our product," Rowley says. "We are trying to protect the player, though, and maintain the exclusivity of our product. We don't want masses of Straight Down-sponsored athletes out there wearing our clothing, we want them to feel special."

Jim DeLaby departs Cypress Ridge Golf Academy

Friday, April 14, 2006

After six years at Cypress Ridge Golf Course, golf instructor Jim Delaby and course management have parted company.

Building plans at the rural Arroyo Grande location have hit several snags. The most recent was a February decision by county supervisors to block developer Denis Sullivan from adding a nine-hole golf course and 147 new homes.

Delaby said that setback and delays in building a hotel and restaurant complex appear to be the catalyst for his departure. Shortly after the county's decision on the proposed nine holes and homes, Cypress Ridge sought a restructuring of his terms of employment, he said.

Delaby, who was twice named instructor of the year by the Northern Chapter of the Southern California PGA, said he has worked with about 600 clients through the Cypress Ridge Golf Academy. Delaby expects to continue working in the county.

For now, he plans to offer lessons at Blacklake Golf Resort and Avila Beach Golf Resort. He will work as an independent contractor at Blacklake and Avila.

Bonnie Lauer, general manager at Cypress Ridge, said Monday that head professional Rick Ventura and James Garritano, both members of the PGA along with Jordan Bridges — a PGA apprentice — will take over more teaching duties.

Cypress Ridge is a highly rated facility that opened in 1999. It offers lessons for beginners and intermediates on Saturdays, women on Fridays, and juniors on Tuesdays and Thursdays, Lauer said.

Delaby can be reached to schedule lessons at (805) 478-5723 or Delaby4 [at] verizon.net.

Soggy SLO Golf

Thursday, April 13, 2006

Larry Mauter reports in The Tribune this week that San Luis Obispo County golf courses await the sun's return as visitation plummets during our wet March and early April.

Six weeks of wet weather on the Central Coast has put backspin on hopes for a fast start to this year's prime golf season

In March, measurable rainfall was recorded during 18 of the 31 days. In early April, rain fell during five of the first six days. This week's forecast calls for more rain.

The unusual pattern has taken a big divot -- up to 25 percent -- from the bottom line of golf courses in the county as they move into their busy season. There are 15 public and private golf courses in the county.

"February was fantastic. But then came March," said Ray Festa, the county's top golf manager.

He has watched as the county's system built momentum in the number of rounds since last July, a time he says was the bottom of a bear market in the local the golf industry.

Monarch Dunes featured in FORE Magazine

Sunday, April 09, 2006

The Southern California Golf Association's FORE Magazine features Monarch Dunes Golf Club in their March/April 2006 issue.

FORE's Katie Denbo shares in her article that Nipomo's newest coastal course offers players nature and nurture. Some excerpt from her article are included below:

While the goal of being "best in class" may be a common one, Monarch Dunes Golf Club, the newest addition to the Southland's golf course roster, is confident that it can not only raise the standard of golf, but change the face of the Central Coast as well. "It's a Scottish highlands-style links golf course, unlike most other courses in California," says General Manager Matt Kalbak of the KemperSports-managed course. "We're the anti-Augusta; we don't want perfect emerald-green conditions. We want natural." Damian Pascuzzo's newest design is nearly 200 miles north of Los Angeles in Nipomo, the seventh new course to open in San Luis Obispo County in 12 years.

Monarch Dunes will eventually have a total of 45 holes of golf. A nine-hole executive course with seven par 3s and two par 4s is planned for completion by fall 2007, and an additional 18-hole championship course will be completed further down the road to accommodate its hopes of hosting major tournaments. The property has also received plan approval for a 200-500 room golf resort and spa.

Mare Blu moving to Avila Beach Golf Resort

Saturday, April 08, 2006

When Mare Blu Ristorante closed its doors two months ago, many wondered if the upscale Baywood Park restaurant was gone for good. But Ron Stewart, owner and chef, is reopening the Mediterranean-Italian eatery at the Avila Beach Golf Resort on May 15.

Stewart said he's moving to Avila Beach to gain more exposure for his cuisine. He also recognized that operating two restaurants would not have been easy, he said.

The new Mare Blu will serve similar fare with an exhibition-style kitchen so patrons can watch the chefs at work. The dinner house will be next to the golfers' cafe, Mulligan's Restaurant.

Renovations are under way so that diners will enjoy a view of the course and ocean. Stewart will also oversee the food and beverage services at the golf course, including Mulligan's.

The former Mare Blu location will house another fine-dining restaurant run by Mare Blu's former sous chef Jensen Lorenzen. The Second Street restaurant's name and opening date have not been announced.

Mare Blu will be open for dinner Wednesday through Saturday.

Woodlands Phase Two Approved

Saturday, April 01, 2006

The second phase of The Woodlands development, which calls for more than 360 single-family homes, a nine-hole golf course and four public parks in Nipomo, will break ground within two weeks after gaining County Planning Commission approval last week, officials said.

The project, phase two of a four-phase development for Woodlands Ventures, is located between Camino Caballo and Mesa Road west of Nipomo. Viva Way will border the east side of the planed community, according to Jay Johnson, a senior planner with the County Planning and Building Department.

The first phase included 468 homes, with more to come in phases three and four.

Monarch Dunes Golf Club is planning to swap out 2 shorter holes on the "Old Course" with 2 longer holes on the new 9-hole course as necessary for championship level play. They hope to attract professional tournaments with this optional layout.
