Queen Mary 2 - Cunard Line
Queen Mary 2 History
On January 8th, 2004, Queen Elizabeth II smashed a jeroboam of champagne smartly against the hull of Queen Mary 2. With the words of blessing, "May God bless her and all who sail in her," the largest, grandest ocean liner ever, embarked on the first of its predicted 1,200 Atlantic crossings.
The Queen Mary 2 is a Cunard Line passenger ship named after the earlier Cunard liner Queen Mary, which was in turn named after Mary of Teck. At the time of her construction in 2003, the Queen Mary 2 was in every dimension the largest passenger ship ever built.
The Queen Mary 2 (QM2) is the current Cunard flagship and makes regular transatlantic crossings. The ship was constructed to replace the RMS Queen Elizabeth 2 (QE2), which was the Cunard flagship from 1969 to 2004. The first RMS Queen Mary sailed the Atlantic from 1936 to 1967.
Queen Mary 2 Construction
The Queen Mary 2 is the first new transatlantic liner to be launched since the Queen Elizabeth 2 in 1969.She is twice the size of the Queen Elizabeth 2.Her engines produce enough power to run a city of 200,000 people.
No ship has ever been designed like the Queen Mary 2 – a liner which sets the benchmark for others, extends the boundaries of ship design, and which is the most powerful and fastest since Cunard’s own Queen Elizabeth 2. Queen Mary 2 is a technically advanced machine far ahead of any passenger ship in service today, and will be so for some many years to come.
Taller than a 23 storey building – this modern luxury liner dwarfs the Statue of Liberty, the Tower of London and the Colosseum in Rome.
The enormity and magnificence of the Queen Mary 2, the largest and most extravagant cruise ship ever built, is nothing if not impressive. With 14 passenger desks, a casino, five swimming pools, and plush accommodations for up to 2,620 passengers, the Queen Mary 2 resembles a small city.
The $780 million Queen Mary 2, the construction of which involved companies from 19 different nations, is 1,132 feet long, 236 feet tall, 135 feet wide and weighs 150,000 tons. The top speed for this mother of all cruise ships is 30 knots.
Changing of the Guards
For the last six decades, there has always been a Cunard "Queen" on the sea. When QM2 arrives in New York Harbor in April, it will be joined by the reigning monarch, the Queen Elizabeth 2, which will be retired from trans-Atlantic service. "QM2 will be the heir to the grace and elegance of bygone Cunarders and at the same time showcase the art of 21st century shipbuilding in its most masterful form," says Pamela Conover, the line's President and Chief Operating Officer. "QM2 signals a proud new chapter in Cunard history."
