(Lichtenstein palace) Lichtensteinský palác
This palace form the whole western side of the upper part of the Lesser Town sguare. Its site was originaly occupied by five burgher's houses which were in 1591 joined to the one complex by Jan of Lobkowicz. After the Battlae of the white mountain in 1620 the palace fellt into the possesion of the governor Karel of Lichtenstein, one of the persones who help to defeat the anti-Hapsburg opposition. In 1791 the Lichtenstien had the palace rebuilt. In the 19th cent. the former Renaissance buildings were provided with a uniform Neo-Classical fasade and the interiors underwent modifications. Some of the interiors retained its appearence from the Late Renaissance period.
(The Garnd Prior's Mill) Velkopřevorský mlýn
The original mill, which belonged to the Johannite monastery, was built on the Devil's Stream as early as during the 13th cent. In the years 1532 to 1596 it was owned by a miller by the name of Stephan and his heirs. In třhe late 16th cent. it became a property of a Lesser Town community, which had it rebuilt in its present Renaissance form with a characteristic gable at the end of the 16th cent. The mill was in operation untik 1936. The mill wheel for Ground water, situated by the bridge spanning the Devil's Stream from Velkopřevorské Square to Campa Island , remained preserved, however, and has been reconstructed.
(Hotel At The Three Ostriches) hotel U Tri Pstrosu
, The building, situated in front of the bigger tower at the mouth of Charles Bridge, was built up in 1585. In 1597 it fell into the hands of Jan Fux, a merchant who sold ostrich feathers, which at the time were a fashion novelty. He had the house rebuilt and, in 1606, decorated with frescoes with the motiphs of ostrich feathers and ostriches s a house sign, the work of Daniel Adam of Květná.. The first floor with two gables was edded in the half of the 17th cent-preerved from that time are also the painted joist ceilings decorated with grape vine motifs and discovered in the course of the modern repairs. Prague's first coffee-house, founded by deodat Damajan yFrom Armenia in 1714, was situated in the building. In the 80's of the 20th ent. the coloured fasade ws repaired and the building was reconstructed to be able to serve a a hotel. On the ground floor there'a a well-known restaurant, whose tradition dates abck to the end of the 17th cent.
(The Palace of Smiricky) Palác Smiřických
Opposite the CHurch of St. Nicholas we can find a palace with an arcade outlet called Smiřických. The palace has the Renaissance basement and later on was rebuilt in the Baroqgue style. The palace played an important role in the history as a place where the 2nd Prague'sdefenetration was settled. By the defeat of the Anti-Habsburk opposition by the BAttle at White Mountain the possesion of Smiřickys was confiscated and the palace fellt into the hands of Albrecht of VAldštejn.
(The Royal Summer Palace) Belvedere
The Roayl Sumer Palace is a bright example of Italian Renaissance architecture. The Palace is situated in the Royal Gardens and was founded by King Ferdinand I. after a plan by Paolo della Stella and with completengbz B. Wohlmut in 1564. the Summer Palace is surrounded by an arcaded gallery with a rich figural and ornamental decoration. The reliefs depict mythological scenes, historical events and huntign ang genre motiphs. Also remarkable is the original Renaissance trust of the Palace. The original entrance of the palace from the garden was replaced to the north, where a monumental staircase running to the 1st floor was built.The PAlace was in the firts half of the 20th cent. restored by p.Janák and now served as a gallery.
The garden in front of the Palace is laid out in a style of a Renaissance giardinetto of cut buxus. In the centre of the garden is the so-called Singing Fountain made from bronze by T.Jaroš which gained its name due to the sound made by falling drops of water. Below the giardinetto, in the direction of Stag Moat, are the remains of a renaissance fig hothouse from the time of Rudolph II.From the southern part of the garden there is a beautiful view on the medieval part of the Prague castle.
(The Royal Garden) Královská zahrada
The Royal Garden creates the supplement to the Summer Palace and was founded in 1534 by G.Spati for Ferdinand I. and later being built up by next of governers.The numerous exotic flowers have been cultivated in this garden-for example botanist P.O.Matthioli grew tulips here before the widespread in the Netherlands. In the following century the garden was enlarged, modified and provide with garden structures. The Royal Garden now forms a part of the representative areas of Prague Castle. Inside the garden we can find building of the Big Ball-game Hall built after a plan by B.Wohlmut at the end of the 16th cent. During the revolutionary battles in MAy 1945 it was demaged for several times and later on renewed by P.Janák. Its original ornamental decoration was restored and completed by some modern topical motyphs. It as also the place where some important internal and international events and gatherings took place. In fron of the central arcade of the palace is a statue Night by M.B.Braun.In a barogue niche by the path running from the Palace there'sa fountain with a statue of Hercules by J.J.Bendl. From the southern part of the garden there 's a beautiful view on the medieval part of Prague Castle and its entrance§ leadind to the Street U Prašného mostu, is closed by a BAroque grille-type gate from the end of the 18th cent.
(The Archbishop palace) Arcibiskupsky palac
Situated on the Hradčany sguare is the Archbishop palace, the original Renaissance palace dating from 1538 which was built as the seat by the first catholic archbishop after the Hussite revolution. The gable on the north side, remainders of the graffito in the courtyard, and inside the Chapel with a lunette vaultand a ceeiling paintings have been preserved from the time of Renaissance. The palace was subjected to an Early Baroque reconstruction at the end of the 17th cent after the plans of J.B.Mathey. The present roccoco fasade dates from the mid-18th cent. and is work of J.J.Wirch. In the interior we can find a series of nine gobelins created in the half of 18th cent. at the Paris studio on the theme of "New india". The Interior decoration of the palace with rich wood-cuts and stucco adornments is supplemented with original furniture and collections of glass and china.
(The Church of Saint Roch) kostel sv. Rocha
Tis Church was built in the near close of the Strahov monastery between the zers 1603-1611 at th etime of Abbot Jan Lohelius. Eventhoought it was built in the period of comming Baroque, the church was made in a style of Renaissance with some Gothic elements.(windows with traceries) Originaly it was the Strahov parish church, but was abilished in the 1784. Nowaday the church is used s an exhibition hall for the purposes of Galerie Miro.
(Rott's house) Rottuv dum
Rott's house is originally a Romanesgue building of which twoo floors have been preserved in the cellarage. On the first cellar floor there is a Romanesgue hall from the 12th century, on the second cellar floor there is Romanesgue ashlar mansory with a barrel vault. Other remainder from the same time have been preserved below the courtyard of the present building.The small speciality of this house is that that under a preserved Romanesgue cellar is still one Barogue. In the 16th century the house was reconstructed into the Renaissance and richly decorated with graffito. The fasade of the building is decorated with ornaments and motiphs of Crafts and Agriculture, because of the ironmongery firm of Root's family, and we can also find there the house sign-three white roses. The paintings of the fasade were executed after the cartoons of M. Ales. Nowdays a hudge ironmonger's shop is housed in the building.
(The fountain on the Little Sguare) kašna Malé náměstí
The fountain in the center of the Little Sguare is richly decorated with a Renaissance grille of 1560, supplemented in the mdd-17th centuty with a figure of a lion.
