(Betlehem Chapel) Betlémska kaple
The Betlehem Church was founded in the year 1391 by the followers of preacher jan Milic from Kromeriz. The place for the building of the chapel-teh original garten was a donation from the royal courtier Hanus of Mulheim. A part from this garden , part of a public lot and a part of the graveyeard of the old parish Church of St. Philip and James were confiscated for the site of the Chapel. By the archeological research under the sguare-immediately in front the fasade ot the chapel- the foundation of the Church of St. Philip and James were discovered. The Chapel become very important religious center thanks to Master Jan Hus, who was an iniciator of an ideologic religious reformation and between the years 1402-1413 also the preacher in Betlehem Chapel. After Master Jan Hus the Chapel was a place of sermons given by Jakoubek from Stribro and Thomas Munzer. In the 16th century the Chapel belongs to the Union of Czech Brethren, later on-in the 17th and 18th century was owned by the Jesuits. After the prohibition of the order of Jezuits(1773) the Chapel was closed and in 1786 demolished and the large dwelling house was built on it's place. In the half of 20th century the preserved part of the Chapel was founded in the cellars of the dwelling house and after the demolition of house the archeological research discovered that three of the chapel's wall had been preserved together with some of the Gothic architectonic elements. the Chapel was restored under the leading of architect J. Fragner and finally completed in 1954. On the wall there are remainders of tracts written by Master Jan Hus, but the wooden furniture of the CHapel(the oratory, the choir and so on..) had to be newly built. The wall were again decorated with the paintings after the Jena Codex and Veleslav Bible. Just a step by the eastern side of the Chapel is the renovated house of the preacher where master Jan Hus lived and wrote his works. In the cellarage of the Chapel we can find the foundations of the original pillars of the Chapel and three methal-casting furnaces - remainders of the local settlement of the 11th cent. As it's a valuable monument of the Hussite revolution, Betlehem Chapel was declared a national cultural monument in 1962, and today it's a place where a lot of college's ceremonies take place and it's still open to the public.
