Muskwa-Kechika - The Largest Protected Wilderness in B.C.

Muskwa-Kechika Accommodation

The Muskwa-Kechika is unique because it is the largest protected wilderness area in British Columbia. Located in the Northern Rockies, the Muskwa-Kechika is comprised of over 4.4 million hectares or 11 million acres. Originally established in 1997 by the BC Government under the Muskwa-Kechika Management Area (M-KMA), it celebrated with a large extension in March of 2001 by the government and is now over 6 million hectares of the Canadian Rockies, twice the size of Vancouver Island, or one and a half times the size of Switzerland. It is still the largest remaining wilderness area in the Rocky Mountains and home to the greatest diversity of wildlife in North America - an inspiring new model for wilderness management.

Visits to the Muskwa-Kechika are best arranged through the Northern Rockies Lodge. All-Inclusive packages including airfare from Vancouver take you over BC’s Coastal Mountain Ranges, Whistler and Prince George to the northernmost reaches of the Northern Rocky Mountains. The Northern Rocky Mountains is a dream nature vacation chock-full of spectacular sights and sports for the visiting tourist. Hotel accommodation is in a 14,000 sq foot modern log building, the largest log structure in Northern BC. If you prefer additional accommodations, they are available in our comfortable lakeshore chalets. For the more adventurous traveler, a log cabin on a remote mountain lake allows you to truly experience nature in this incredible natural wilderness park. As an example, staying in the Netson Lake Outpost Cabin in July or August will give you the opportunity to observe as many as 20 Moose a day in their natural habitat. While staying at Muncho Lake during a comfortable Lodge Vacation package, enjoy easy hikes to view wildlife together with you experienced guide. Stone Sheep, Mountain Goat, Caribou, and Deer are frequently observed in the Muncho Lake valley and at the Mineral Licks. This is a true nature vacation. You can also tour by boat, canoe, or airplane. Soak in natural hot pools of the Liard River Hotsprings and enjoy spectacular displays of Aurora Borealis (northern lights) between mid August and late September. The Northern Rockies Lodge offers year round accommodation at mile 462 of the Historic Alaska Highway. We take up most care to protect the important wildlife and environmental values in the South Gataga and Kechika areas of the Canadian Rocky Mountains. The Canadian Parks and Wilderness Society (CPAWS) was instrumental in creating the Muskwa-Kechika Management Area (M-KMA). Wayne Sawchuk is a well known photographer who has traveled the Muskwa-Kechika area extensively on horseback. Many of Wayne Sawchuk’s wilderness expeditions start at the Northern Rockies Lodge.
