Alaska Highway Accommodations

The Alaska Hwy is a marvel, constructed in record time over miles and miles of remote wilderness during the Second World War. Of course it's now a far cry from the dusty pioneer road that was cut through the bush by the U.S. Army Corp Engineer units. Today the Alaska Highway is now mostly paved with asphalt and is smooth going all the way. Hotel accommodation including off-road nature tours and fishing trips are best experienced at Mile 462 of the Alaska Highway in Muncho Lake Provincial Park. What used to be a muddy, slippery, twisting, single-lane mudslide trail is now a modern day marvel. The Alaska Hwy (Mile 0) begins in Dawson Creek in Northern BC, an easy days south of the Northern Rockies Lodge in Muncho Lake Provincial Park. From Dawson Creek the Alcan Hwy. winds northwesterly through Ft. Nelson and the Muskwa-Kechika Wilderness Area to Muncho Lake. About 50km (30 miles) north of Muncho Lake, the Alaska Highway crosses the Liard River and you will find the lush oasis of the Liard River Hotsprings. From there the road winds through Canada's Southeastern Yukon and you will reach Whitehorse, the capital of Yukon Territory (8 hours drive) after you have left Muncho Lake’s Northern Rockies Lodge. Offshoots of the Alaska Highway take you to the Northwest Territories or give you access to outstanding hiking, fishing and wildlife watching opportunities in the Northern Rocky Mountains around Muncho Lake Provincial Park and beyond. Spectacular Virginia Falls in Canada’s foremost National Park are twice as high as Niagara Falls, Ontario. Liard Air Ltd. offers daily sightseeing excursions from the Northern Rockies Lodge including landing at Virginia Falls with their floatplanes. On the ride up the Alaskan 'switchbacks' make sure you pull off at the many sights. Even the nightly Aurora Borealis can be seen from the various rest stops around Muncho Lake and the Northern Rockies Lodge during fall and winter.

Almost a wonder of the world, the highway scenery is breathtaking for visiting drivers who have come to rediscover that 'pioneer spirit’ on their way to the Alaska heartland. The best mountain scenery alongside the Alaska Highway is not in the Yukon, but is in Muncho Lake Provincial Park where the Northern Rockies Lodge is open year-round and offers excellent hotel, motel and RV campground accommodations. Touring from Muncho Lake in the Muncho Lake Provincial Park depends on your level of adventure because there are many activities that await you and many forms of accommodations. The Alaska Highway is still undiscovered, especially in the Northern Rocky Mountains. Stake your claim for adventure from the Northern Rockies Lodge!
