Choosing fishing rods used to be a pretty simple matter. Kids and adults who occasionally fished used cane poles or cheap Zebco rods and reels (or maybe a Pocket Fisherman... remember those?). The serious fishermen used the more exotic fishing rods made of fiberglass or graphite. That was then.

Nowadays, fishing rods at every level employ the latest materials and designs. There are three basic styles of rods: casting, spinning, and fly. Here are some details and recommendations for each...

Fishing Rods: Casting

Casting fishing rods are designed to hold spincasting or baitcasting reels, both of which mount to the fishing rod on the top, where your thumb can engage the reel's line release. Most fishermen who use this design like rods with forefinger triggers (pistol grips), which prevent slippage.

Another aspect to keep in mind is the material used in the grip of fishing rods. Some anglers prefer rods with foam grips, while others like cork and some like a harder plastic grip.

Fishing Rods: Spinning

Spinning fishing rods are designed to hold spinning reels, which mount on the underside of the rods. Pistol grip triggers are not included on this kind of pole. They also differ from casting rods in that the line guides run along the bottom, in keeping with the flow of line coming from the fishing reel.

Another important consideration with spinning fishing rods is balance. The grips on well-made rods are designed to counter the overall length of the rods, creating a comfortable feel, regardless of the weight of the fishing reel or lure you're using.

Fishing Rods: Fly

Fly fishing rods are often just like everything else associated with fly fishing - expensive! However, it's an understandable expense, because these are some of the most painstakingly crafted fishing rods manufactured today. Ask fly fisherman and they'll tell you that when they find rods they like, they take extremely good care of them. Having said that, if you look around diligently enough, you can find bargains on well-made fly rods.
