Poppin' and Walkin' for Bassnorth carolina fishing topwater

Two of the most productive methods of topwater fishing are using a popper, or chugger type lure, and "walking–the-dog" with a surface walker. When it comes to popper type lures, you may remember the old Heddon Lucky 13, Bass Oreno, or the Heddon Chugger Spook. Lure design has changed drastically since the first production of those aforementioned lures, and now we have such poppers as the Berkley Frenzy Popper, Tsunami Talkin’ Popper, Rapala Skitter Pop and the Lucky Craft G-Splash.

Stone Mountain State Park

With more than 17 miles of trout streams, Stone Mountain State Park North Carolina offers exciting angling opportunities nearly year round.  Wild trout can be pursued in creeks such as Garden, Widow’s, and Big Sandy.  For the fly fishing purist, a special permit can be purchased to gain access to Bullhead Creek trophy trout water.  One of the greatest fishing opportunities in Stone Mountain is the delayed harvest waters on the East Prong Roaring River.

Floating Worm Tactics for Largemouth Bassnorth carolina fishing floating worm

A major staple for spring time bass fishing is the floating worm. The tactic can work well in pre-spawn and post-spawn situations. I have most of my success with a watermelon seed color but that is probably due to the confidence level and the amount of time I spend
fishing with them. One look at the Wal-Mart shelves will show you that the most popular colors are bubblegum and white.  A 2/0 hook on relatively light line is all that is needed for this rig. A baitcaster can be used if the worms are heavy enough but I prefer a 6'6" medium spinning rod with 10lb test. I like to fish floating worms in the backs of coves and creeks lined with timber structure or boat docks.

Surf Fishing The Outer Banks of North Carolina north carolina fishing in the surf

My first experience surf fishing was with my father on Wrightsville Beach, NC in the 60’s. He parked our shiny black Ford Fairlane in a gravel parking lot off the beach and we hiked over the dunes to the surf, carrying rods, buckets, tackle box and various other fishing paraphernalia. I remember him catching bluefish, croakers, puppy drum and flounder as I played in the tidal pools nearby. Later, my grandmother would fry the filleted fish to a golden brown and we would eat them with hushpuppies and coleslaw.

Bass Fishing - Buzzin' for Bass

If you are anything like me, you live for the action packed, heavy hitting,
bone jarring topwater explosion producednorth carolina fishing buzz bait
when you throw a topwater bait. As far as I am concerned, it is incredibly exiting to watch the water splash upwards and the opportunity to see that lunker bass flash and slam into your bait! Getting a bass to take surface baits requires you to get their attention. Out of all the topwater baits on the market, few, if any, come close to creating as much surface disturbance as does the buzzbait. To a prowling hungry bass, this unique sputtering, splashing and gurgling noise that is created by a buzzbait is extremely hard to resist. I would like to educate and provide you with an understanding of the buzzbait so you can also enjoy the success of this awesome and versatile lure.

Fishing for Bluefishnorth carolina fishing saltwater

by: Todd Lehr

Bluefish (Potatomus salatrix) is a tenacious saltwater fish that provides some of the best angling thrills on light tackle. They are mainly thought of as an Eastern United States fish, although they are found in most temperate waters throughout the world, except in the cooler waters of the northern Pacific.

Bluefish are schooling fish built for speed and power. They are a blue green shade along the top of the body near the dorsal fins, and have silvery sides and a whitish / silver underbelly. They have relatively large heads that feature powerful jaws and rows of very sharp teeth. Their tapered bodies end in deeply forked tails that allow them to be powerful swimmers and fighters.

Locating the Best Bass Fishing Areas

What is it in bass fishing that everybody are driven on to engage on such activity? People get fond of bass fishing that is why every trend that they hear about it really catches their interests and as much as possible get into it.

“Where are the what...? Where are the bass!” How many of the anglers (tournament and recreational) go to a body of water you've never fished before, drop the boat in the water, then, ask this question to yourself? This is probably one of the biggest topics in bass fishing that an angler should learn more about.

Bass Fishing - The Carolina Rig

Most of my years of fishing for bass, I have been devoted to the Texas Rig. I had little understanding of the need for the Carolina Rig. Until lately...

New fishing situations and conditions I have encountered have shown me the value of this setup.

Right off the bat, I can tell you that one value of the Carolina Rig is more action from the bait. Since the bait is not quickly dropping to the bottom, it tends be more lively.

 NC Trout Fishing

north carolina fishing trout

Stone Mountain State Park is a great destination for NC trout fishing.  With more than 17 miles of trout streams, Stone Mountain offers angling opportunities almost year round.  With great road access throughout the park and very clean entry trails, Stone Mountain makes an ideal destination for families.  The river does receive a lot of pressure, but with hatchery supported stocking it has enough fish to sustain everyone.  If possible visit during the week to avoid the weekend crowd.  To read more about the fishing on Bullhead Creek check out the article from FLY FISHING THE SOUTHEAST.

Fishing for Smallmouth Bass

If y ou haven't tried fishing for smallmouth bass you are missing out!  North Carolina has countless rivers and streams full of these feisty fighters.  Light spinning tackle armed with scaled down largemouth lures are preferred.  My favorite lures are 4-inch soft plastic jerkbaits, 3-inch plastic jigs, Tiny Torpedoes, and Rooster Tails.  The most important factor to keep in mind when presenting the lure is the river current.  Big smallies position themselves in current edges waiting to ambush prey as it is pushed by them.  Anglers will find it easy to hook an aggressive 12-inch fish, but only the correct bait matched with the perfect cast will fool the big 4-lb fish.
