Reynolds to blast tobacco

04/20/06
SOMERVILLE -- Patrick Reynolds, the grandson of tobacco company founder R.J. Reynolds, who is now an anti-smoking advocate, will present "Tobacco Wars! The Battle for a Smoke-free Society" 7 p.m. April 26 in Somerset Medical Center's Fuld Auditorium.
Reynolds -- the first tobacco industry leader to abandon the business -- will discuss the dangers of smoking and how his family's cigarette brands, Camel and Winston, killed his father and his eldest brother. Reynolds founded the Foundation for a Smokefree America in 1989 and has traveled across the country educating students about smoking and motivating smokers to kick the habit. He has also testified before Congress and numerous state legislative groups advocating for smoking bans in public places, support for tobacco prevention programs and laws that make it more difficult for children to obtain cigarettes. His biography, "The Gilded Leaf," tells the story of three generations of the Reynolds family and its tobacco business. "Tobacco Wars! The Battle for a Smokefree Society" is cosponsored by the Somerset County Cancer Coalition and the Somerset County Communities Against Tobacco Coalition. The event is free of charge. Pre-registration is required. For additional information or to register, call (908) 203-6234 or registering online at www.somersetmedicalcenter.com/events.
