Cardiothoracic Surgery is a specialty that deals with surgical procedures on structures in the thoracic cavity or chest cavity. Thoracic cavity is the hollow space enclosed by the ribs and breast bone (sternum) in the front and vertebral column in the back. Thoracic cavity is separated from the abdominal cavity by the diaphragm.

Thoracic cavity contains esophagus, trachea, lungs, bronchi, heart and the major blood vessels like the aorta, pulmonary arteries and veins and the coronary arteries.

Cardiothoracic Surgery includes the repair of all forms of congenital and acquired defects of the heart and blood vessels, heart / lung transplantation and correction of lung, esophageal and chest wall conditions and deformities.
