Eye SurgeryEye surgery, also known as ophthalmic surgery or ocular surgery, is a surgical procedure performed on the eye typically by an ophthalmologist. The most commonly performed eye surgeries performed are for the treatment of cataracts. A cataract is an opacification or cloudiness of the eye's crystalline lens due to aging, disease, or trauma that typically prevents light from forming a clear image on the retina. If visual loss is significant, surgical removal of the lens may be warranted, with lost optical power usually replaced with a plastic intraocular lens (IOL). Insertion of an intraocular lens is the most commonly performed eye surgical procedure. The procedure can be done under local anesthesia with the patient awake throughout the operation which usually takes less than 30 minutes in the hands of an experienced ophthalmologist.
