Texans have known all
along what the rest of the world is now discovering. Austin is a
fabulous city. Brimming with great restaurants, bars, and live music
venues, and full of history and beautiful sites, Austin is a great
place to visit.
If it's heat you like, come in the
summer and enjoy the laid-back lake lifestyle. If you visit Austin
in the summer, head down to New Braunfels to float
the Guadalupe river. After you float the river, stick around
for a Texas music performance at nearby Gruene
Hall.
If stifling heat isn't
your thing, plan a trip to Austin in the fall, when the weather
is perfect and you can catch an awe-inspiring University of Texas
football game. When the game is over, take a cab or walk over to
Stubb's Barbeque,
where you can enjoy some finger-lickin' barbeque and great Texas-style
live music.
Whatever your mood. Austin has the
restaurant for you. Head to Guero's on Congress or Maudie's on 7th
for some of the best Tex-Mex in town. For lunch or dinner, the locals
love Hula Hut
on Lake Austin, where Mexican meets Polynesian (if you like margaritas,
try the "thwirl"). For a special night out, try a mouth-watering
steak at Ruth's Chris Steakhouse, gourmet fare at the Driskill Grill,
or swanky seafood at Truluck's. And for some late-night home cookin',
you can't beat Magnolia Cafe or Kerby Lane.
Austin is known for its nightlife,
so head over to Sixth Street and the adjacent Warehouse District
for a seemingly endless assortment of bars, pubs, and clubs. In
Austin, you'll find a wide-variety of great live music, so plan
ahead or ask around to find a nearby show that suits your taste.
To escape the city, head
west of town, into the hill country. You can catch a sunset at the
Oasis
on Lake Travis or go for a dip in one of the many
swimming holes in and around Austin.
