Cheap Broadway Tickets for Sold-Out Performances

So you've decided this is the week to see a play on Broadway, huh?. The next logical question is 'where do I buy tickets, the box office, scalpers, or the discount ticket booth Tkts located at 47th and Broadway?'

If you have the time to wait in a long line, Tkts is the answer. You can get really good discount tickes (50% off) for any broadway show the same day. No advance sales available on the TKTS line.

ticketsA wait of 15 -30 minutes is not at all uncommon, once the window opens and ticket go on sale at 3pm. But you would need to have been on the line at least one hour prior to the ticket sale time. You might even be able to choose between 20- 30 shows that you can possibly see that same night. Most tickets are 50% off the original price but there are a few shows that are only 25% and 35% off at the TKTS window. There is a $3.00 service charge per ticket. TheTKTS ® booths sell Broadway, Off-Broadway, Dance and Music events. Payment is by cash or traveler's check. All available tickets are posted on boards outside the ticket windows. At the TKTS booth in Times Square there is a separate PLAY ONLY line. Same-day discount ticket buyers may queue to purchase tickets for Broadway and Off Broadway dramatic plays. These productions will be indicated on the electronic boards with a letter D. Both locations sell the same tickets from the same pool.

If you do not purchase your show tickets at the tkts Box Office windows or through a ticket sale service, your tickets may have been illegally obtained and there is a possibility you will not be seated upon arrival at the theatre.

The most important things to remember about the Tkts system are:

  • Tickets can't be purchased in advance.
  • You won't know what shows are available until the board opens at 3pm the day of the show. There are no guarantees that tickets will be available for you to purchase by the time you reach the front of the line, even if the board shows availability.
  • Purchases are cash or travelers checks only, no credit cards.
  • There is a terribly long wait in line unless you arrive 1 - 2 hours in advance.

NYC Broadway Tickets; A History

In 1947, The American Theatre Wing held the first Tony Awards (named after Antoinette Perry) at the Waldorf Astoria to recognize excellence in theatre. The 1940's also saw the birth of off-Broadway productions, with the growth of small theatres in Greenwich Village.

In 1950, the tradition of the gypsy robe was born on Broadway, when Bill Bradley, a chorus member in Gentlemen Prefer Blondes , sent the worn-out robe of a co-chorus member to a friend in a different production. Since then, the robe has been passed to the chorus member with the most credits on the opening night of Broadway plays, with each former “gypsy” adding a prop from his or her performance. The robes have become so elaborate that there are now eight in existence!

The New York City theatre community received more support in the 1960's. In 1963, the Theatre Development Fund was established to finance experimental production and in 1966 Mayor John V. Lindsay established the Mayor's Office of Film, Theatre and Broadcasting – the first Office of its kind anywhere in the world – to promote and assist the industry. That same year, the New York City Board of Estimates officially recognized the “special theatre district” around Times Square.

In the 1970's and 1980's, Broadway continued to capture headlines and hearts. In 1975, Michael Bennett's musical masterpiece A Chorus Line dominated Broadway with a Pulitzer Prize and nine Tony awards. Cats opened at the Winter Garden Theatre in 1982, beginning its course as the longest- running show in Broadway history. Five years later, Victor Hugo's Les Miserables opened on Broadway, later moving to theatres across the globe.

This far-reaching scope of Broadway was recognized again in 1982 when the League of New York Theatres and Producers changed its name to the League of American Theatres and Producers. But it isn't only the shows that have made history. In 1988 most of Broadway's theatres were designated historic sites by the New York Landmarks Preservation Commission.

After the terrorist attacks of September 11, many Broadway theatres re-opened on September 13, some singing “God Bless America” before performances. The theatre community raised money for the families of the victims and encouraged theatergoers to continue to support Broadway.

Today, the Broadway district stretches from 41st street to 53rd street between Sixth Avenue and Ninth Avenue, encompassing 39 theatres – only four of which are actually located on Broadway! Broadway spends nearly $700 million in New York City each season, not to mention the indirect economic impact of visitor spending. Approximately 1,500 off-Broadway and off- off -Broadway productions are also staged each year, selling an estimated 7 million tickets annually. And, as always, the New York City theatre community continues to enrapture critics and audiences alike with its brilliant actors and ground-breaking performances.
