The beginnings of the Royal Library can be traced to the second half of the 16th century. The sons of the Swedish monarch Gustav Vasa were the first to compile catalogues. Under the auspices of Queen Christina, who reigned between 1632 and 1654, the Royal Library was transformed into one of the larger libraries in Europe. Apart from the deposit collection of printed material, the KB has a high level collection of scholarly literature in the humanities and a number of special collections. The Royal Library has especially strong collections of books from the fifteenth- and sixteenth-century Early Modern German Lands and the Low Countries and eighteenth-century France. The Royal Library is open to the general public and the collections can be generally used free of charge. www.kb.se.
