The North Shore Center for the Performing Arts in Skokie was host to JAMbalaya ...
A concert benefiting the music community of the Gulf Coast affected by Hurricane Katrina. Nearly 500 people were treated to ten performances running the gamut of Gulf Coast music – jazz, blues, brass band, rock n’ roll, and zydeco. The musicians were joined by three area restaurants and dozens of volunteers to create a Mardi Gras party such as the North Shore had never seen.
Nearly $12,000 was raised to benefit four organizations providing relief: The Tipitina’s Foundation, Preservation Hall’s New Orleans Musicians Hurricane Relief Fund, The Grammy organization’s MusiCares program, and the Mr. Holland’s Opus Foundation Emergency Katrina Fund.
Merci beaucoup to all who made JAMbalaya possible! We are eternally grateful for the generosity of more people than we can count, from the musicians to the backstage crew to those who created our festive lobby decorations; from the restaurants and merchants who donated food and drink, to the media who got the word out, to the lobby staff; and to the North Shore Center itself, whose wonderful facility and talented staff were donated. The printer, our web host, the sound company – the list goes on and on and on. And, of course, to YOU! Without an audience, it’s not much of a show.
New Orleans and the Gulf Coast will remain in crisis for months, even years, to come. They still need your help, and it’s surely not too late to give it. Please click over to our beneficiaries page for direct links to our partner organizations to learn how you can continue to ReNew Orleans.
Meanwhile, hang around here for awhile, and watch for pictures and video from the show. Laissez les bontemps roulez!
