The Las Vegas Wranglers (6-7, AK Wins Series 4-2) defeated by the Alaska Aces (8-3, AK Wins Series 4-2) 4-3 in triple overtime at Sullivan Arena in Game Six early Wednesday morning. Alaska winger Cam Keith ended the third longest game in ECHL history at 13:30 of the third overtime, sealing the series win for the Aces at 4-2. The game lasted 113:30 and will go down in league history as the third longest game in Kelly Cup Playoff History. Wranglers forwards Steve Crampton and Derek Edwardson, as well as defenseman Tim Hambly each scored in the final defeat of the season. Alaska received goals from Ryan Gaucher, Troy Riddle and Mike Scott in the series clinching Game 6. Goalie Chris Beckford-Tseu made 44 saves for the victory, while Marc Magliarditi made 55 saves in the defeat. While the Wranglers season is now complete. the Aces move on to face the winner of the Fresno/ Bakersfield series in the Semi-Finals.
In the first period, Las Vegas took the 1-0 lead just 3:23 into the opening period. Center Matt Dzieduszycki centered a pass from the left-wing corner in Alaska territory to the front of the net for a wide open Steve Crampton. The Wranglers winger fired a shot past Chris Beckford-Tseu high on the glove side for the early Las Vegas lead. The Wranglers extended their lead to 2-0 when defenseman Tim Hambly knocked home a rebound at 8:59 for his third goal of the playoffs. Hambly’s rebound was created by a shot from Sean O’Connor from the right-wing circle. The Aces countered to trim the Las Vegas lead to 2-1 with only one minute remaining in the period. Aces winger Mike Scott wound up with a slapshot from the center-ice redline. Scott’s shot whistled past Wranglers goalie Marc Magliarditi for the Alaska winger‘s sixth goal of the playoffs, sending the teams to the locker room with the Wranglers up by one.
In the second period, the two teams traded power-play goals with Alaska striking first to tie the game a two goals a side. The Aces took control after a 5-on-3 advantage expired down to a 5-on-4 power play. Alaska defenseman Ryan Gaucher snuck in on the right-wing circle, snapping a shot past the glove of Marc Magliarditi at 6:39 of the second period. The Wranglers answered back with a power-play goal of their own at 9:25. Center Derek Edwardson walked out of the left-wing circle and snapped a shot past Beckford-Tseu, beating him on the glove side. The goal snapped a 0-19 string on the power play for Las Vegas, with their last power-play goal coming in Game 3 at Las Vegas. The Wranglers went to the locker room with a 3-2 lead.
In the third period, Alaska tied the game at three goals a side when Troy Riddle threw the puck on net from the right-wing corner. Riddle’s shot bounced off traffic and trickled in past Magliarditi at 9:27 of the third period. Neither team scored for the remainder of the period as the Aces outshot Las Vegas 14-5 in the final period.
After two scoreless overtimes, Alaska forward Cam Keith scored the game-winning goal with 6:30 left in the third overtime. Keith tipped his own rebound out of the air and into the back of the Las Vegas net for his first goal of the playoffs.
