The original Bluenose was designed specifically to race for the International
Trophy, a prize established by W. H. Dennis, publisher of the Halifax Herald,
to answer the complaint that the America's Cup races were between yachts rather
than working vessels that could stand up to a good wind. Bluenose beat all comers
handily, and she was chosen to represent Canada in the race against the U.S.
defender.
Bluenose beat Elsie by margins of more than two miles in races held on October
22 and 24. Two years later, the pride of the Canadian fishing fleet, Bluenose
sailed to Chicago to represent Canada at the Century of Progress Exposition.
There and in Toronto, the pride of the Canadian fishing fleet was visited by
thousands of admirers.
With the outbreak of World War II and German U-boats a threat even to the
Grand Banks schooners, Bluenose was tied up until sold to the West Indies Trading
Company in 1942. Under Captain Wilson Berringer, she sailed in the interisland
trade until 1946 when she grounded off Haiti, broke her back, and sank. Although
built for racing, first and foremost Bluenose was a working vessel, and she
spent the bulk of her career in the long-line cod fisheries on the Grand Banks,
racing only when the fishing season was over. In 1963, the government of Nova
Scotia built Bluenose II, a replica of the original, which sails as a goodwill
ambassador for the province.
