Model Ship Wasa measures: 38"L x 33"T x 11"WClick here to see detailed photos!
The Wasa ship of 1628 was the
most ornately decorated vessel of her time. She was commissioned by the King of
Sweden and was the finest warship of the Swedish Navy. During construction, the
King insisted that the ship be fitted with a second row of cannon. This made it
top-heavy and she sunk not even a mile from land, just 20 minutes after her launch.
It would be 333 years before her salvage amazed the world and ushered in a new
age of nautical archaeology and historic preservation.
As Wasa's was the first
recovery of its kind, virtually everything that was done was precedent-setting.
The wood and all artifacts were permeated with polyethylene glycol, a preservative.
Leather was treated in a similar fashion, while six sails had to be painstakingly
unfurled in a shallow pool. Divers also rescued an additional 3,000 artifacts
of various kinds from the wreck site. These included sculptural pieces that
had fallen off as the iron fittings rusted.
One of the most popular
attractions in Sweden since her recovery, Wasa is the centerpiece of the Statens
Sjöhistoriska Museum on the Stockholm waterfront.
