37"L x 36"T x 12"W
The ship Royal Louis was the largest and most powerful ship of the line of
the French Navy in 1780. With 120 cannons and a crew of over 1200 men she could
be a formidable friend or enemy. Her captain was a Squadron Admiral and she
was one of the most powerful first-rank vessels belonging to the French Royal
Navy at that time.
The Royal Louis was one of the very few first rates to carry bronze 48 pounders,
making her one of the most powerful vessels belonging to the French Royal Navy
at the time. These ships were substantially larger than either the English or
Dutch ones of similar gun power, and this made them good sailers, able to carry
large quantities of stores for the crew.
Our model represents the ship Royal Louis according to the plans of 1779, when
she was Admiral-Ship of the Blue and White Squadron, being part of the American
Squadron, also called Earl d'Estaing's.
