Diamond Club to Provide Del Mar Discount Admissions

Del Mar Thoroughbred Club will institute a new "Diamond Club" this year for all racing fans, enabling members to receive discounts of 50% at the admission gate each time they attend either the live summer meet at the historic track or take in simulcast racing at the adjacent year-round satellite.

DMTC is teaming up with its sister Inter Track Wagering facility on the Del Mar Fairgrounds Surfside Race Place so that fans can receive club membership and discounts at both locations.

The Diamond Club and its discount card actually will debut at Surfside Race Place on Wednesday, May 3. Notices of the start of the club already have been mailed out to approximately 18,000 racing fans on Del Mar's database and the initial sign-ups for it will begin this Wednesday (April 26) at Surfside Race Place. There is no charge to join the club, but a photo ID is required to obtain a card.

Both Del Mar and Surfside Race Place plan to use the tracking information obtained from the club memberships to better understand their fans habits and patterns, thus allowing them to gear promotions and other events to the patrons taste.

In conjunction with the institution of the Diamond Club, both DMTC and Surfside will raise their standard admission prices. The tracks Stretch Run (or Grandstand) admission will go from $5 to $6 and its Clubhouse price will rise from $8 to $10. Surfside will raise its standard admission from $3 to $4 and its Saddle Club admission from $8 to $10.

But by using their Diamond Club cards, fans can reduce their admissions to both facilities by half in all cases -- a $3 admission for Stretch Run and $5 at Clubhouse at the track and a $2 general admission and $5 Saddle Club price at the satellite. All racetrack paid admissions include a daily program, a $2 value.

Simulcast wagering featuring races in California and across the country is conducted at Surfside Race Place throughout the year with the exception of the seven weeks that the live race meet takes place at Del Mar. This year the seaside course runs from Wednesday, July 19 to Wednesday, September 6.

Surfside will make a special push to sign up as many Diamond Club members as possible during Kentucky Derby week. This years "Run for the Roses" is Saturday, May 6, and on the Wednesday, Thursday and Friday prior to the big race the satellite will be offering a free set of handsome Del Mar drinking glasses to all fans who sign on for the club.

Blue and gold diamonds are Del Mar's signature "look," or theme, for many of its advertising and promotional pieces and the track has even had a set of diamond jockey silks made up for use as its "house" silks (used when an owner's silks are not available), as well as for other special occasions. The Diamond Club name originated from this theme and the blue and gold swipe cards used for the discounts will follow the pattern.
