BIG BEND - "Music on the Rio"
"When you are close
to nature you can listen to the voice of God" -- Herman
Hesse
Fall Music Series featuring Butch Hancock, Slaid Cleaves and Steve Fromholz!
Join us on a very special river
trip that blends some of the best Texas folk music with the spectacular scenery
of the Big Bend. Our music series river trips are three-day, two-night
adventures with great cuisine and intimate campfire concerts. We have been
producing this music series for over eleven years and have selected our most
popular acts for your enjoyment. Here is a sample river itinerary:
Day
1: Departure day. Meet at the Far Flung Outdoor Center at 8:00
a.m. Personal gear is transferred into waterproof bags, last minute supplies
are purchased and gear is loaded into Far Flung vehicles. We will depart for
the river about 8:30 a.m. Arriving at the put-in, we will spend some time
loading boats and arranging gear for our three-day journey. Lunch this day is
along the river and we usually expect to arrive at the first night's camp about
3:30 p.m. (may vary seasonally). After spending time setting up camp (our staff
will assist you with tents and gear), there is ample time for a side hike, a
swim or just relaxing by the river. Appetizers, dinner and plenty of great
campfire music round out the evening.
Day
2: Awake to the smell of coffee and a hearty breakfast cooking on
the stove. After a leisurely meal, we'll continue our journey down the river
with a lunch break and some light hiking in the desert. This night's camp
complements the campfire music echoing off the canyon walls.
Day
3: Our last day on the river starts with another gourmet
breakfast (yes, you will gain weight on this trip) followed by the final
exploration of the Rio Grande. We'll take-out in the early afternoon where our
vans will be waiting to return us to the Far Flung office.

Music by:
Slaid Cleaves -
There’s a certain prejudice out there when it comes to albums like this.” At a cozy corner restaurant in his native New England, far from his adopted hometown of Austin, Texas, songwriter, singer, and guitarist Slaid Cleaves is reflecting earnestly on the implications of his new album, Unsung. “More than anything, I just want people to think of it as the new Slaid Cleaves album. It’s something of a new direction for me. It’s the first record I’ve made outside of Austin since I moved there 14 years ago. And the songs…the songs are less driven by narrative storytelling. More emotional, more expressive.”
Butch Hancock - As a member of the groundbreaking
Flatlanders, singer/songwriter Butch Hancock helped kickstart the progressive
country movement of the 1970's. As a solo artist, Hancock recorded a series of
country-folk albums for his own independent Rainlight label, which showcased
his literate wordplay, quirky humor and dry, Dylan-esque vocal delivery.
Recently, Butch has been on the road with the Flatlanders covering the
well-received reunion album - Now Again. Come see this great artist live in the
Big Bend! This year Butch and Francois Mader of Crumpet's have teamed up
to offer the best gourmet and music trip ever conducted. Join us for
great food, fun and music!
