Has your husband recently gained weight? Overweight people snore more than slim people. Researchers aren't sure why, but one theory is that excess fat, which is distributed everywhere, could alter the tissues in the soft palate. Fortunately, an exercise program like walking several times a week will help him trim any extra pounds and stop his snoring in six to eight weeks. Have your physician check your husband for increased nasal congestion. At night, this could be causing him to breathe through his mouth, leading to snoring. Causes of nasal congestion include a newly acquired allergy to dust, mold, or even foods like wheat or eggs; some prescription drugs like tranquilizers; and, rarely, fluid accumulation due to heart or kidney problems. Even drinking alcoholic beverages in the evening can congest nasal passages. If your husband can rule out all these factors but he remains noticeably congested at night, have him flush his nasal passages with salt water. Mix 1/3 teaspoon of salt and a pinch of baking soda in a cup of water. Use a bulb syringe or a neti pot (available at natural food stores) to flush each nostril with the solution, allowing it to drain out the throat or opposite nostril. I would also suggest he try a homeopathic preparation called SnoreStop, which has shown promise in controlled tests. A researcher in New Zealand has developed a device that can bring relief to people who snore and suffer from sleep apnoea, where breathing stops during sleep.
