The NICK COUTRAS AWARD will recognize the senior-class high-school football player from the middle Tennessee area who best exemplifies the qualities of exceptional individual effort, superior attitude, dedication to team, academic, and athletic excellence and commitment to community service.
This college-scholarship award honors the late NICK COUTRAS, renowned head football coach at John Overton High School for 16 years, as well as at Cumberland University in Lebanon, Tennessee. A mentor to countless young men, Coach Coutras inspired his players to excel, both on and off the field, through his expectation of self-discipline, effort, teamwork and integrity. By example, he demonstrated that honor, compassion and heart are essential qualities to carry through life.

Coach Coutras was a native Nashvillian who captained the 1952  Hillsboro High School football team. He attend MSTU where he played on several OVC championship teams.

RECIPIENT SELECTION  

PROCESS

For award consideration, candidates will be nominated by the high-school football coach and principal/headmaster. Six finalist will be selected, with three finalists from Davidson County Schools and three finalist from surrounding counties' schools. All finalist will be honored at the awards ceremony and banquet at the Titans' Stadium Club.

 

SCHOLARSHIP

AWARDS

The winner of the NICK COUTRAS AWARD will receive a one-year, $5,000 scholarship to the school of his choice, as well as a special plaque in recognition of his achievement. The recipient's high school will receive a trophy in honor of that student's accomplishment and a $1,000 donation to its athletic program.

In addition, the five other finalists will each receive a one-year, $1,000 scholarship and a plaque. Each finalist's high school will receive a special-recognition plaque.

All finalist & nominees will receive two tickets to the

GAYLORD HOTELS MUSIC CITY BOWL PRESENTED BY BRIDGESTONE.

Now in its second year, NICK COUTRAS AWARD GOLF TOURNAMENT, was held at 8:00 A.M. on September 24, 2005, at the Opryland Spring House Golf Club.
