Another 'Dog-Gone' Promotion

Our dog kennels are full, and we would like to see all of our dogs 'gone' to a new and loving home.

To help ease our overpopulation, we are offering the following to anyone who adopts a dog over the age of six months from us during the month of June.

All dog adopters who donate a can of squeeze cheese, a package of hot dogs, or a 16 ounce or larger can of dog food will receive a free personalized ID tag.

For every additional donated can of squeeze cheese, package of hot dogs, or 16 ounce or larger can of dog food adopters will receive a $10 discount off the price of their dog adoption.

Bottom line - Bring in a case of 16 ounce or larger dog food, a dozen cans of squeeze cheese or packages of hot dogs, and adoption fees are waived.

Alert: Cocoa Mulch Is Lethal to Dogs and Cats

Cocoa Mulch, which is sold by garden supply stores and home improvement outlets, contains a lethal ingredient called "Theobromine."

It is lethal to dogs and cats. It smells like chocolate and it really attracts dogs. They will ingest this stuff and die. Several deaths been documented. Just a word of caution — check what you are using in your gardens and be aware of what your gardeners are using in your gardens.

Theobromine is the ingredient that is used to make all chocolate — especially dark or baker's chocolate — which is toxic to dogs.

Cocoa bean shells contain potentially toxic quantities of theobromine, a xanthine compound similar in effects to caffeine and theophylline. A dog that ingested a lethal quantity of garden mulch made from cacao bean shells developed severe convulsions and died 17 hours later. Analysis of the stomach contents and the ingested cacao bean shells revealed the presence of lethal amounts of theobromine.
