Hot Creek

Last Updated Jun 13, 2006 by Harry Blackburn: Well the good news is that the water is running clear and the fish have adjusted and are starting to look to the surface. Bad news its been windy. The stream flows are holding near 200 cfs and should stay this way for sometime, unless we have another cold spell. I will take the benefits anytime versus the drought conditions. The two large back-to-back winters will help flush silt and scour the bottom to make a healthy environment for the bugs and fish alike, some caddis on the public sections right now and a large drake May fly have been coming off and the fish are keying on them try a size 12-14 pmd pattern you should have some results mid morning. The Yellow Sally Stones should make an appearance in the next weeks as warm weather continues and water temps increase. Remember, the fish are still there. You can still wet a line and the odds of hooking a fish here are still quite good.

Nymphing Patterns: May fly/yellow sally stone fly patterns, scuds, midge patterns, The dirty San Juan worm. 16-18s 14 for the scuds, and a size 12 for the dirty worm.

Dry Fly Patterns: Bwo's, Caddis in 18s midday Yellow Sally, PMDs, yellow Stimulators
sizes 12-20s depending on what pattern you use. larger fly sizes for the Yellow Stone flys and PMDs.

Streamer: small streamers can working well in the afternoon if you want try something differnt.

Upper Owens

Last Updated Jun 13, 2006 by Harry Blackburn: The water levels have risen and should stay this way for sometime. Water is running clearer. You can still fish with some good to fair results. Not a lot of fish but we have hooked some nice resident Brown Trout and some Cutthroat. Nymphing the riffles and slower pool has produced the best results. Have your repellent handy as mosquitoes will carry you away if you don't if its not windy.

The lower area below Benton Crossing Bridge is now open and has been stocked. The upper area from the Benton Crossing Bridge to Big Springs/395 is under special regulations. It is best to look at your CADFG regulation booklet.

*******Area is primed for a good hatch of Mosquitoes. Have your bug repellent handy.

Nymphing Patterns: Prince nymphs, Pheasent Tails, Hares Ears, San Juan worms, Are all good flies to start with.

Dry Fly Patterns: Adams, Orange Stimulators

Streamer: BeadHead Black or Olive Wolly Buggers. size 8

Crowley Tributaries

Last Updated Jun 13, 2006 by Harry Blackburn: all the Crowley Tributaries have risen but some are still fishable. McGee is aprroaching 100 cfs and is dirty. A few late season Spawners are still present but it all but over for the time being. Special regulations are in effect - read your DFG pamphlet to be sure of which areas are open or closed.

Nymphing Patterns: Spawning tactic's glo bugs if you want? Fishing the pools with Bead heads nymphs will do the trick. Please handle with care.

Dry Fly Patterns: Caddis and Mayflies patterns will take fish midday. Try a orange stimulator! size 16.

Lower Owens

Last Updated Jun 13, 2006 by Harry Blackburn: Bummer! The flows have come up and are now holding near the 700 cfs mark. You can still fish but wading is very Very VERY difficult! Best to try another stream right now, but if you do fish, the Midges and Mayflies are on the dinner plate for the first half of the day for our watery friends, with a few Yellow Sally Stones buzzing about and some Caddis dancing in the evenings. Mostly nymph fishing with some action on the surface towards dusk. The reduced flows were short lived, as water and power needs have increased and a consistent flow of water will come from Crowley Lake to make room for the rest of the run-off. The Lower Owens fishes best when water levels are less than 300 cfs but still very fishable at 350 cfs. The Gorge above the Pleasant Reservoir is your great spot with plenty of opportunities for wild Brown Trout 12-16. You will have to hike to reach this area. It is mostly pocket water and pools. I call it combat fishing but the rewards make it worthwhile. Beware - Rattlesnakes are present and there is only limited access. Take plenty of water, you will need it.

Nymphing Patterns: Try nymphing in the mornings with WD-40s and Brassies, then go to Bead Head Pheasant Tails, Olive Surface Emergers, Barr's wet emergers or RS Emergers. Sizes 18-20s.

Dry Fly Patterns: Small midge, BWO,Baetis and caddis pattern. Yellow Sally patterns.

Attractor Patterns: Small Stimulator, Trudes, Wulffs

East Walker

Last Updated Jun 13, 2006 by Harry Blackburn: Well the flows have risen back up too near record highs for this time of year holding at 940 CFS as of 6-13-06. Hold off until flow drop to the 400 mark. Caddis, Yellow Stones and Mayflies along with the daily midge activity is all on the menu. Mother Nature has blessed this fishery again with another wet winter, as conditions over the winter kept plenty of water moving and allowed the trout great habitat. Current flows are up from previous seasons.

Nymphing Patterns: Pheasant Tails, Olive Surface Emergers, Brassies, Red Copper Johns, Bead Head Black and Olive WD-40s, Disco Midges, Barr's Wet Emergers, Zebra Midges, Olive & Natural Birds Nests, Prince Nymphs, and Green Nori's Caddis. San Juan Worm (red) size 14-16.

Dry Fly Patterns: BWO, PMDs, Hemingway Caddis, EC Caddis, Schroeder's Para Caddis and Adams in sizes 16-18, Orange and Yellow stimulators sizes 14-16.

Streamer: Try Muddler Minnows, Wool Head Sculpins, Bunny Leech's, Woolly Buggers and Dave's Chubs. Use size 6s and see what happens.

Crowley Lake

Last Updated Jun 13, 2006 by Harry Blackburn: The weather has been playing a large role as the windys have been wreaking havoc. One day it's from the South East next day its out of the Southwest somedays the wind is up around 11:00 its a crapshoot on what area to fish, depending on the wind direction. McGee,Green Banks, Sandy Point, all have had there moments. Look for the areas of clear or clearer water to be the best. The trout have been holding in 11-15 ft of water. The algae is a large factor in some places as it will foul your flies. Crowley's water level have been rising steadily and is quite full. Run-off is not over. The perch bite is on if you like eating fish- these are the best and there's no limit- can you say "FISH TACOS"? Look for the trout to be just outside the perch, so if all you're catching is perch, move out to deeper water or pull your fly up higher off the bottom. Water is clear; in some areas you can see 10-12' with the perch spawning 9-12ft of water. Curtis Milliron of CA Fish & Game said this could be a record year for Crowley with great success from all anglers.

The lake levels are rising, as LADWP cannot let out as much water as there is coming in. The river system is full in the southern Sierra; with the run-off this is a calculated balancing act. Use common sense when driving on the backside of the lake, as there are areas where the ground is very soft, and a tow truck will be costly.

Use caution - the wind can come up fast during thunderstorms.
Be safe and have fun!

Nymphing Patterns: Black or Gray Midges with copper or red wire have be the best, size 16-18s. Calibaetis Nymphs size 16.

Streamer: Olive leeches, Damsel fly Nymphs. Calibaetis Nymphs all have been working in McGee Bay at 14ft.

Mammoth Lakes Basin

Last Updated Jun 13, 2006 by Harry Blackburn: The good news is the road is Open as of 6-12-06. Lake Mary is open and free of ice in most areas. Twin Lakes is ice-free and very cold. Dress warm if you plan to tube. Most of the lakes above Lake Mary remain snow/ice covered. Use extreme caution near streams and lakes in the higher elevations. Rotten ice is an issue this time of year and a dunk could be life threatening.

Nymphing Patterns: PTs Nymphs, Beadhead Hares Ears, Zebra Midges, sizes 16-20s

Dry Fly Patterns: Adult midges in the evenings when it glasses off or if it glasses off. size 16-20 patterns

Streamer: Black or olive Wolly Buggers. Size 10-12s

Fishing Report Details

San Joaquin

Last Updated Jun 13, 2006 by Harry Blackburn: The road is still closed until further notice. Our best guess is the road will open in the second half of June. Look for another great season when it opens!! Look for mid-July through August to be outstanding.

Fishing Report Details

Bridgeport Reservoir

Last Updated Jun 13, 2006 by Harry Blackburn: Bridgeport Reservoir has been fishing well lately. The water at the south end of the lake is still little but cloudy but improving, due to run-off. The water temps are much cooler as you approach these areas. I would look for the middle of the lake towards Rainbow Point and Sandy Point from 8-13 feet of water for the action. Water temps where holding at 60 degrees on the surface. If it is calm you should see fish rising on the adult midges Large Red ones and the large still water Mayflies Calibaetis. If you're looking to heave it and leave it (Midge fishing) use your Crowley tactics, as both the Midging and striping will produce. Talk to Eric up at Paradise Shores RV Park and check out the Brown Trout Fry for the Bridgeport Fish Enhancement Program. You can make a donation to help with the care of these young monsters. Call 769-932-7735.

Nymphing Patterns: Black/copper wire, red midge patterns are working the best. around the 9-12 ft depth. Try Hares ears and PTs patterns as the calibaetis are starting to hatch.

Dry Fly Patterns: Adult Midge and Calibaetis to rising fish.

Attractor Patterns:

Streamer: large brown or Black leech patterns or hornbergs with a Hares Ear dropper.
